What to Expect
- Depending on the cards drawn by Madam Eva, the location of your objectives will differ each run.
Known Traps
- Spinning Blades (Basement)
- Collapsing floor near optional Strahd portrait fight (no trap control panel, triggered few seconds after when portrait HP hit 50%)
- Rotating spikes in the dungeon (where you end up if you fall through collapsing floor)
- There's a box near the door in Rahadin's room in the basement.
Tips and Misc
- Chat with Madam Eva. She will read your fate. This affects where the needed quest objectives must be completed and where to exit the dungeon.
- You can, optionally, skip Madam Eva's reading - this is really not advisable, as it leaves you with no idea where any of your objectives are.
- You don't need to speak with the Steward.
- Head straight to the Dining Hall: turn right twice.
- If you decide to ignore being told to go straight to the Dining Hall and instead head north, you will be pursued by Animated Arms which cannot be directly damaged (you might be able to kill them by swinging wildly or using certain multi-target spells like Chain Lightning.)
- Dining Hall
- Chat with Strahd. This will, after a few dialogue options, trap you in the room and start a fight with two Shadows of Hate, monsters with a nasty on-hit stacking Curse effect that reduces your maximum HP and Positive Amplification. You have two options:
- Bring everyone inside the room and fight your way out. Note that Remove Curse will make the whole fight much easier.
- You can, instead, avoid this fight entirely by placing a Dimension Door in the room before talking to Strahd and activating the quest's Dimensional Anchor effect (reskinned as Strahd's Protection in this expansion.) For those without capacity to cast Dimension Door, level 11 Fighter hireling Mikayl the Pious (purchased from Dibber Malone in The Marketplace) has Lesser Dragonmark of Passage. Note that after speaking to Strahd, the Gargoyles in the room adjacent to the one you'll recall to also become hostile.
- There's also a secret door behind Strahd that leads to the mirror room, though note that it can't be opened while the fight is ongoing.
- Time to work on your objectives
- "Treasure" is the Icon of Ravenloft. Refer to the map to find the location.
- "Ally" is friendly NPC Ezmerelda. She will be kneeling at the given location.
- "Death" is Strahd's optional challenge. Strahd will be waiting at the location.
- After getting the Icon of Ravenloft and finding Ezmerelda, a new objective will appear – find the Keystone.
- All exits from the castle are sealed after you talk to Strahd. After obtaining the Keystone, approach the one indicated on the objective list to finish the quest. Be aware that each exit has a different quest end boss, which fluctuate wildly in terms of difficulty - one has you fighting four Black Dragons!
- Optional objectives and NPCs
- You're probably going to end up running into a few of these anyway, but if you plan to seek them out:
- Havel Tarus and Gustav Herrenghast are rare, spawning only on some combinations of cards (see diagram.)
- Soothing Pidlwick's spirit requires you to head to the room with the cake on the third floor, replace the figures on the wedding cake and play the tune on the music stand; following this, you fight a few spectres and talk to his ghost. You'll need a reasonably high Perform for this optional.
- The tormented spirit is in a pool of blood in the bath chamber. She attacks if you approach.
- Strahd's Maid, Helga Ruvak, is in a room that is not labeled on the map on Level 2: Court of the Count. She is in the room that appears to connect with "Level 3: Rooms of Weeping". She will ask for your help and then spawn several other vampires and attack you.
- The Mirror Room is an unlabeled room full of mirrors on the Main Floor. The secret door can be hard to spot and is found in a spotlight of greenish light and connects this room to Dining Hall (Bug: No apparent Spot Alert).
- The accountant, Lief Lipsiege, is on level 2 and can give helpful information to new players and a chest by asking "About this chest here" and passing a fairly low intelligence check. If given a bottle of wine from the Wine Cellar (by asking "Why are you chained" and then asking "Is there any way I can help" while having the bottle in your inventory, he will give specific directions on how to find objectives.
- There are three different rooms labeled "South Guard Tower", one on the main level, one on level 2 and one on level 3. All three contain skeleton archers and can spawn the optional fight with Felix Blackarrow.
- No matter where you are when you enter the optional fight to be tested by Strahd you will exit it via a magic portal and reappear in the Lounge room at the top of the Spires of Ravenloft. There is a hidden door next to the rest shrine there that contains three hags that will open and attack when you try and rest.
- If you fight the portrait of Strahd make sure you stand directly in front of the portrait because the floor collapses behind you. If you fall down the collapsed floor while fighting the portrait of Strahd you can jump off in the (unlabeled) Mechanic's Room that leads into the long hallway to the Chapel. If you continue falling or jump into the trap door in the room it leads into the basement and will spawn several enemies at the bottom when you land.
- "Testing the heart" entails heading to the top of the stairs leading to the roof exit by touching the Brazier flame and then walking back down the stairs a flight and then fighting three waves of Restless Souls it spawns. Nothing you can do can damage the Heart itself (you won't be doing that until The Curse of Strahd).
- Connections and Rooms
- Castle Ravenloft is large and very confusing. Rooms and floors are labeled multiple ways, can be labeled one thing on the map and another thing when looking at the connecting portal and a third thing inside the quest notes, and in at least one case are mislabeled completely. There are three different sets of stairs and several important rooms that can only be entered through one or two obscure paths. It can be easier to not think of the different floors as floors but simply as rooms that are connected via stairs and portals. There is a second quest that takes place inside the Castle and several rooms that cannot be accessed during this quest as a result. The following is a list of each floor, what rooms are inside it, and what other rooms and floors they connect with starting at the top.
- Spires of Ravenloft contains the Lounge, Portrait of Strahd fight, and with Merchant Card your ally.
- Connects via jumping down the collapsed floor in the Portrait room to the Mechanic's room and connects to very top of the South Tower Stairs by a portal doorway next to the collapsed floor by Strahd's Portrait.
- Level 3: Rooms of Weeping contains Count's Dining Room, Bath Chamber, Study, Royal Bed Chamber, Hall of Heroes, and the Treasury.
- Connects to South Tower Stairs, Brazier Room via a portal door that is correctly labeled on map but labeled "Dungeons" when you look at it, through a secret door to level 2 the Court of the Count, and the Tower Hall Stair. If you go through the treasury and another secret door there's also a "Tower Door" that is used in another quest.
- Level 2: Court of Count contains the Accountant, Audience Hall, Chapel, an unlabeled room that contains Helga the vampire maid, an unlabeled room generally called the Mechanic's Room through a secret door, and one of the South Guard Tower rooms.
- Connects to South Tower Stairs, top entrance to the Collapsed Guard Tower Stairs, The Main Entry Floor via two different portal doors next to each other, the Chapel by jumping over balcony or taking nearby flight of stairs on the north of the balcony, the Basement level by jumping through trapdoor in Mechanic's room, Level 3: Rooms of Weeping (via a short flight of stairs and a portal door that parallels the maid's room and on the map appears to be in that room but is right next to it instead), and the North Tower Stairs via a secret door north of the maid's room and a long hallway to the east.
- Main Level/Entry Level contains Dining Hall, Great Entry, Mirror Room (unlabeled), Lower South Guard Tower, and a long hallway to the east with greenish lighting that contains nothing but trash mobs.
- Connects to South Tower Stairs, Collapsed Guard Tower Stairs, and the Court of the Count by two portal doorways near each other.
- Basement Level: Larders of Ill Omen (referred to as the Cellars in quest notes) contains Servants Quarters, Wine Cellar, Kitchen (and Cyrus), Butler's Quarters, Hall of Bones, Guard's Quarters, and Chamberlains Office.
- Connects to South Tower Stairs, Tower Stairs labeled as "Main Floor" on map, Brazier Room via secret door in Chamberlain's Office, Collapsed Guard Tower Stairs, and Upper Servants Quarters.
- Dungeons contains Torture room (for Priest card) and prison cells that are mostly used in another quest.
- Connects only with South Tower Stairs. You can jump down into the Torture room from the Brazier room but not the other way.
- Stairs
- South Tower Stairs connect to all floors and are usually the easiest way to move between them. The top portal door connects to Spires of Ravenloft. Next floor down is a portal door to Level 3: Rooms of Weeping. Next floor down is a portal door to Level 2: The Court of the Count. The next floor down is a non-portal doorway that connects to the Entry level. Next floor down is a portal door to the Basement Level: The Larders of Ill Omen. Very bottom portal door connects to the Dungeons.
- Tower Hall Stairs/North Tower Stairs: The top contains the heart of the castle and the room shakes when you get near it. It is sealed off by a magic barrier. The top accessible portal door connects to Level 3: Rooms of Weeping. Continuing down the stairs there is portal door labeled "Secret Door" that must be discovered and opens into the Upper Servant chamber. A few feet past it is a non-portal doorway that connects a long hallfway, another room labeled South Guard Tower (and another possible Black Arrow spawn location) and connects by a secret door to the Maid's Chamber. Continuing down the stairs there is a landing with a long corridor going to the west that appears to connect to the Audience room but only connects to another South Guard Tower (and another possible Black Arrow spawn location.) There's no reason to go down that hall unless looking for that optional. Continuing past the landing will lead to a short flight of stairs that connects to the Basement Level: Larders of Ill Omen. In the basement level the door to this Tower Hall Stairs is labeled on the map as "To The Main Floor" for some reason. Technically you can reach the top of these stairs by touching the flame in the Brazier room. Any reference to "the top of the North Tower" is reached by the Brazier flame.
- Collapsed Guard Tower Stairs: The top entrance is from Level 2 Court of the Count and can only be jumped off which leads to the middle exit via a non-portal doorway which connects to Entry floor via the Mirror Room and a secret door. Very bottom connects to Basement Level via portal doorway.
- Special Rooms
- Brazier Room appears on the map to be accessible from the dungeons but only connects to Torture room by jumping down from the Brazier room and not the other way. It actually connects via a portal door to Basement Level that is labeled as "Chamberlain's Office" on the map when in the room, and through a secret door in the Chamberlain's Office after fighting Rahadin, or a portal door to level 3 Rooms of Weeping that is labeled as "Study" on the map but incorrectly labeled the Court of Count when you look at the door itself inside the room. The room contains two Iron Golems that can be a tough fight on higher difficulties.
- Upper Servant's Quarter: Can only be reached through the Secret Door on the Tower Hall Stairs or through a door on Basement Level through the Servant Quarters. This room can contain your ally or the keystone.
- Chapel can ONLY be reached on level 2 by a long hallway to the east of Audience Hall (turn right before the two doors that lead "To the main floor") which goes past the secret door to the Mechanics Room and from there to a balcony overlooking the chapel. Only other way is to drop through the collapsed floor after fighting the Portrait of Strahd and getting off in the Mechanics Room and not falling further.
- Objective Locations
- There are seven possible combinations, depicted on the side image – refer to the map for each card location.
- Of special note:
- Anarchist // Priest // Mists
- The "Mists" card indicates a random location for this objective. So far, these are the known possible locations:
- Audience Hall - Level 2
- Treasury - Level 3 (in the back, by the miniature tower)
- The top of the North Tower Stairs, accessed via the Brazier Room
- The "Mists" card indicates a random location for this objective. So far, these are the known possible locations:
- Priest // Torturer // Tempter
- The Torturer card indicates in the quest notes that your ally is in the Dungeon or Torture room. This is very misleading. She is actually found by going into the Brazier room and then over to the pair of thrones overlooking the Torture room. She cannot be found by entering the Dungeon.
- Transmuter // Healer // Donjon * Necromancer // Shepherd // Marionette
- The "Transmuter" card indicates the Icon of Ravenloft is located in the North Tower, and "seek entry below" means:
- Go to the Brazier room, kill the golems, and touch the flame in the middle of the chamber. You'll be teleported to the top of the North Tower.
- The Icon is inside a locked chest (the lock DC is above 67 on LE) after chest opens Icon falls to floor next to chest. It can be picked, but the key is obtained in the Kitchen (Basement), by being "entertained" by Cyrus.
- The "Transmuter" card indicates the Icon of Ravenloft is located in the North Tower, and "seek entry below" means:
- Disambiguation of "Ally Card - Shepherd - Servant Quarters - Cellars" - means Ezmerelda is in the UPPER servants quarters on the map (sitting between two shrines)
- After obtaining the Icon of Ravenloft and finding Ezmerelda, you need to find the Keystone. So far, these are the known possible locations:
- In the Study fireplace, on the 3rd floor
- In the Upper Servant Quarters, through the Servants Quarter in the Basement Level.
- In the Chapel behind the altar, on the 2nd floor.
- Finally, with the Icon and Keystone in hand, you must escape the Castle. Possible exits include but aren't limited to:
- Main Entrance - guarded by four dragons
- Top of the North Tower stairs - access through the Brazier Room, and touching the Flame
- Top of the Level 4 stairs on South Tower - You have to climb the stairs to the top, enter level 4 Spires of Ravenloft, pass through the Portrait of Strahd room, and climb to the top of the stairs in the next room.
- Brazier Teleporter in the Basement Level through the Chamberlain's Office.

Format: Place (Access) // Guardian
- You can access to the Brazier room from Basement (through the secret door at Rahadin room) and Study (3rd floor).
- About Miser-Icon: Icon isn't warded like other cases. So you don't need fight the guardian since this guardian has no chest.
- About Priest-Ally: Ally is on the balcony overlooking the Dungeon. So you can't reach her from Dungeon floor. Go through the Brazier room. If you don't go close to brazier then you don't need fight.
- About Key Stone: Unlike Icon, Key Stone isn't warded even if there is a guardian. You can just pick it up and run away, if you don't need guardian chest.
- About Transmuter-Icon: the Icon just appears when you open the North Tower chest. There's two ways of doing it, of course: having the key from Cyrus (from Basement Level) or through Open Lock.
