Haggle

Haggle (Charisma)

Description[edit]

Allows you to negotiate better prices with vendors when both buying and selling.
Details: While shop starting prices vary, you get approximately a 0.5%this is not entirely accurate, see below price change in your favor per each point of haggle you have.

If you dream of riches, Haggle will be your best friend, allowing you to trade with vendors (including pawnbrokers) for much better prices. This skill raises the amount you receive when selling items, and lowers what you pay when buying items. Haggle has no effect when using the Auction House.

  • TIP: Just before buying or selling, cast Heroism and/or Eagle's Splendor, activate Skill Boosts, and do anything else that will temporarily raise your Haggle skill or Charisma ability (which the skill is based on). Later on this page is a thorough account of ways to boost Haggle.

Haggle is a Class Skill for Alchemist, Artificer, Bard, Rogue

A good "Haggle Bard" build, known as Mississipee Queen, is discussed here:

Haggle Formulas[edit]

Item with Base Value of 5pp

All items that can be sold or bought have a Base Value, found at the bottom left of the examination window. The amount of money received or paid at vendors (including pawnbrokers) for items is:

Price = % Adjustment x Base Value

The % Adjustment (% Adj.) varies in four ways:

  • Selling (much lower) vs Buying (usually higher)
  • Based on the character's haggle modifier
  • Based on the vendor / pawnbroker
  • Based on the character's reputation with the vendor

Each of these variables is detailed in the following sections and quantified for easy at-a-glance use in the Progression Table

Note: For the remainder of this page, "vendor" used alone refers to both standard vendors and pawnbrokers. "Standard vendor" includes barkeeps, general vendors, armor vendors, scroll vendors, etc.

Selling to Vendors[edit]

When selling to vendors the % Adj. is determined according to the following formula:

Selling % Adj. = Base SELL Percentage + (0.0025same as 0.25% x Haggle)

...with a maximum of 50% after Haggle is applied.

Base SELL Percentage varies by vendor:

Income maximizing takeaways:

  • Prioritize selling to pawnbrokers (Note: this can be tedious)
  • Complete the reputation quests
  • Never sell to Azdaf
  • If you sell to Marraenoloth to clear inventory space while in The Shroud, plan to buy back everything at the same price from a vendor outside of the raid, then resell it to pawnbrokers or normal vendors (including the one used for buyback)

Buying from Vendors[edit]

When buying from vendors the % Adj. is determined according to the following formula:

Buying % Adj. = [1 - (0.005same as 0.5% x Haggle)] x Base BUY Percentage

...with a minimum of 50% after Haggle is applied.

That's a little challenging to compute, but its use can be simplified by rearranging the formula:

Buying % Adj. = Base BUY Percentage - (Base BUY Percentage x 0.005 x Haggle)

So, while it leads to a more favorable Buying % Adj., as the Base BUY Percentage (aka Markup) decreases, the benefit of each increment of Haggle also decreases. It's helpful to define a new term for this Haggle increment:

"Per Haggle Modifier" = Base BUY Percentage x -0.005.

Substituting, this makes the final formula:

Buying % Adj. = Base BUY Percentage + (Per Haggle Modifier x Haggle)

Base BUY percentage and, by extension, Per Haggle Modifier vary by vendor:

  • 120% for standard vendors (includes Vahna Smythe, at the Pawn & Gift Shop in the Resort Spa in Ataraxia's Haven)
    • ∴ -0.60% per Haggle (from: Per Haggle Modifier = 120% x -0.005; ∴ means "therefore")
  • 117.5% for some standard vendors after the Reputation Quest has been completed for their area
    • ∴ -0.5875% per Haggle
  • 110% for non-guild hireling vendors
    • ∴ -0.55% per Haggle
  • 100% for all guild vendors (in House Kundarak) and Dugbar, the pre-U22 amenities vendor in Guild Airship Cargo Holds
    • ∴ -0.50% per Haggle
  • 125% for budget pawnbrokers
    • ∴ -0.625% per Haggle
  • 127.5% for mid-level pawnbrokers
    • ∴ -0.6375% per Haggle
  • 130% for high-level pawnbrokers
    • ∴ -0.65% per Haggle
  • 135% for premium pawnbrokers
    • ∴ -0.675% per Haggle
  • 240% for Azdaf the Wary (Yugoloth Alchemist in Amrath) and for Marraenoloth (Yugoloth Ferryman in The Shroud)
    • ∴ -1.20% per Haggle
  • 400% for Haddad (summoned Efreeti Forgemaster from the DDO Store Repair Anvil)
    • ∴ -2.00% per Haggle

Vendors on a guild airship, other than Dugbar, are not guild vendors; they offer their goods at the same rates as non-airborne vendors.

Expense minimizing takeaways:

  • Complete the reputation quests
  • Prioritize buying from guild vendors, which are unusually cheap
  • Hireling contracts are somewhat cheaper than other goods; even cheaper when purchased from the Guild Hireling Vendors
  • It is extra expensive to buy Yugoloth Favor Potions
  • Plan to bring all the crafting (and adventuring) supplies needed while in The Shroud raid because the Ferryman is a rip-off
  • Luckily there isn't much to even want to buy from Haddad

Note: Update 7 stealth-nerfed Eldin Thestral, the Guild General Vendor in House Kundarak again. He now only pays 10% base. Do not sell to him. Dev. Tolero implied this was an error that will be corrected in the future (DDO Forums - archived, loads slowly).

Haggle Progression Table[edit]

Below is a tabulation of how Haggle impacts the selling and buying price of items at different vendors. Use the "w/Rep" SELL column and the "Vendor" BUY column when visiting Vahna Smythe. The extraordinarily cheap & expensive vendors are not included.

Examples:

  • A character with 0 Haggle skill wishes to sell a base value 800pp sword to the budget weapon pawnbroker. All brokers buy at 15% of base value. There is no haggle adjustment, so the character can walk away with 15% x 800 = 120pp.
  • Another character with 40 Haggle wants to buy the same sword from the broker. The budget broker markup at 40 Haggle is 100%. So, the character pays 800pp. (...and the broker makes 85% profit!)
  • A third character with 17 Haggle has a necklace (b.v. 6,510pp) to sell. A standard vendor in a city ward where they've completed the reputation quest has a Base % of 12.5% and the per haggle adjustment is 0.25%: [12.5% + (0.25% x 17)] x 6510 = 16.75% x 6510 = 1090pp 4gp 2sp 5cp.
  • Another character with 17 Haggle wishes to buy boots (b.v. 4,750pp 2gp) from the premium broker. The premium broker markup is 135% and the per haggle adj. is -0.675%. So, the character pays [135% + (-0.675% x 17)] x 4750.2 = 123.525% x 4750.2 = 5,867pp 6gp 8sp 5cp.

Reputation Quests[edit]

Many standard vendors, in particular those within Stormreach proper, buy and sell at rates that can be improved by completing a specific quest to increase reputation within their area.

  • For directions, sometimes offered via labyrinthine dialog, to reputation quests, speak to the contacts listed in the table below; some will bestow the quest or arc, others are greeters at the main entrance to city wards.
  • Vendors at establishments (Inns & Shops) within the areas listed also have improved rates unless otherwise noted.
  • Areas confirmed to have no reputation quest are not listed; standard vendors in these areas always use vendor base rates.
