The Land of Barovia
Requires access to adventure pack
|
In D&D lore, Barovia is a mountain valley within the fictional Balinok mountains. The terrain is densely wooded and the climate is one of frigid winters. The valley hosts a small village (also named Barovia), over which looms Castle Ravenloft, ancestral seat of vampire ruler Count Strahd von Zarovich. The location is loosely based on the real world Transylvania.
In DDO, The Land of Barovia is a Wilderness Adventure Area introduced with the Mists of Ravenloft expansion. Two variants exist, heroic (level 10) and legendary (level 30).
Accessing the area[edit]
- To access the area for the first time, you must first complete Into the Mists introductory quest located in House Jorasco or Eveningstar.
- Once you complete the quest, you can enter the wilderness directly from House Jorasco or Eveningstar.
Alternatively, Bottle of Mist, exclusively available with Mists of Ravenloft ultimate bundle, allows to teleport to Barovia from any location:
- If you have not run Into the Mists, you teleport to House Jorasco.
- If you have completed the introductory quests, you teleport to the Blood on the Vine Tavern in Barovia.
Public areas and quests[edit]
There are three small public area hubs within Barovia. Each hub has a separate story arc with 3-4 quests and an NPC who will teleport you to the near vicinity of each quest entrance. (The exceptions are Into the Mists, which can only be accessed from outside Barovia, in the House Jorasco Enclave, and the two raids, whose questgivers teleport you into the raid directly.)
Each of these areas has a mailbox (shaped like an urn, with scrolls protruding from the top.) When the area was originally released there were no mailboxes to better characterise the isolating nature of the mists - this was later removed as it made long stays in the Mists inconvenient.

Random wilderness encounters[edit]
These minor, randomly located events often appear at the same spawn points as 'rare' encounters, but do not give XP. Chests from these encounters will include Vistani Talismans/Totems and sometimes Sentient Filigrees.
- Mysterious Mist - Transports you to a random location in Barovia. Certain mist patches instead lead to Cebruvass's lair.
- Shrines - These either work as Rest/Resurrection shrines, or disappear when used and are replaced by a pack of Shadows that leave a chest when slain.
- Vistani tale teller - Listen to the entire tale of Strahd for a chest.
- Danika Martikov - Talk to Danika, then kill the Scarecrows that appear for a chest.
- Wachterhaus Cultists sacrificing woman (Victoria Lukresh). After the cultists die, Victoria transforms into a Bearded Devil - kill all the Devils that spawn for a chest.
- Barovian Witch with Dretches - Kill to unlock a nearby chest.
- Zombie horde - Kill waves of Strahd Zombies and Crawling Claws (almost 100 with a full party) for a chest.
- Furious Berserker - Asks for your help, then betrays you and attacks with two friends. Kill for a chest.
- Roving Flesh Golem - Kill Frankenstein's Monster (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) and the pitchfork-and-torch-wielding villagers will reward you with a chest.
- Cocoon-like pillar - Turns into altar with attack or defense boost, Crawling Claws, or Barovian Creepers when you approach.
- Vistani Bandits and Scouts - Transport you to random location if you pay them, otherwise they attack.
- Woodsmen and Forest Trappers - they ask about your silver weapons. They do not attack if you say you have none; otherwise, they reveal themselves as Werewolves (although they don't transform) and attack.
- Revenant fighting worgs - joins you as a friendly NPC if asked.
- Slaughtered wagon group with breakables - sometimes guarded by Phantom Warriors.
- Circle of dead ravens - Scarecrows appear and attack.
- Adventurer's Pack next to body and ravens - May give a collectible, or summon Crawling Claws.
- Altar with attack or defense boost. You don't lose the buff if you enter a quest from the wilderness.
- Bear traps.
- Pressure plates.
- Wooden planks with unkillable rats.
- Though not an encounter as such, Seraz the Traveling Merchant may also be encountered on Barovian roads as a welcome friendly face.
Fixed wilderness encounters[edit]
Two encounters in the Barovian wilderness have fixed locations. Neither of these grant XP, but both can yield a chest.
- Friendly NPC Father Donavich may be found outside the chapel in the village of Barovia. His son, Doru, has been turned into a vampire spawn, and Donavich has been forced to shut him in the basement. He will give you a chest if you put his son out of his misery. Doru can also be stunned with Panacea, which causes him to revert to an NPC - after this Donavich will give you a chest no matter which dialogue option you select. It is unclear if this is a bug.
- The Carnival Exhibit is found in a Vistani wagon south of van Richten's Tower, sealed in a stone sarcophagus falling out of the back. This monster always spawns, but to fight it and open the nearby chest, you must first find three crests randomly located around the nearby lake. (See the map for locations.)

1st to 15th
- Find Strahd's first journal entry †On a stump north and east of the gate between Barovia & Vallaki
- I am the Ancient. I am the Land. My beginnings are lost in the darkness of the past. I was the warrior, I was good and just.
- Find Strahd's second journal entry †On a platform in the pond just south of the road
- I thundered across the land like the wrath of a just god. But the war years and the killing years wore down my soul as the wind wears stone into sand.
- Find Strahd's third journal entry †On a platform north of the road, where it finishes curving towards Vallaki
- All goodness slipped from my life. I found my youth and strength gone, and all I had left was death. My army settled in the valley of Barovia and took power over the people in the name of a just god, but with none of a god's grace and justice.
- Find Strahd's fourth journal entry †near the north eastern walls of Vallaki or on a stump northeast of Vallaki
- I called for my family, long unseated from their ancient thrones, and brought them here to settle in the castle Ravenloft. They came with a younger brother of mine, Sergei. He was handsome and youthful. I hated him for both.
- Find Strahd's fifth journal entry †near the southern walls of Vallaki or on a barrel behind a house in the south side of town
- From the families of the valley, one spirit shone above all others. A rare beauty, who was called "perfection," "joy," and "treasure." Her name was Tatyana, and I longed for her to be mine.
- Find Strahd's sixth journal entry †On a crumbled pillar at the southern end of the large southern island in the lake, on a stone under the bridge at begin of river; south of islands, or on a platform north of road east side of bridge.
- I loved her with all my heart. I loved her for her youth. I loved her for her joy. But she spurned me! "Old One" was my name to her - "elder" and "brother" also. Her heart went to Sergei. They were betrothed. The date was set.
- Find Strahd's seventh journal entry †On a platform between the river and the road to Berez or on a stump west of road, south of cottage.
- With words she called me "brother," but when I looked into her eyes they reflected another name--"death." It was the death of the aged that she saw in me. She loved her youth and enjoyed it. But I had squandered mine.
- Find Strahd's eighth journal entry †Close to the Ruins of Berez or on a rock in the river near the Ruins of Berez
- The death she saw in me turned her from me. And so I came to hate death - my death. My hate is very strong. I would not be called "death" so soon. I made a pact with death, a pact of blood. On the day of the wedding, I killed Sergei, my brother. My pact was sealed with his blood.
- Find Strahd's ninth journal entry †North side of Argynvostholt
- I found Tatyana weeping in the garden east of the chapel. She fled from me. She would not let me explain, and a great anger swelled in me. She had to understand the pact I made for her.
- Find Strahd's tenth journal entry †On a platform south of the road to Argynvostholt
- I pursued her. Finally, in despair, she flung herself from the walls of Ravenloft, and I watched everything I ever wanted fall from my grasp forever. It was a thousand feet through the mists. No trace of her was ever found. Not even I know her final fate.
- Find Strahd's eleventh journal entry †at the crossroad to van Richten's Tower or on a platform west of the road (west of the lone building in the field)
- Arrows from the castle guards pierced me to my soul. But I did not die. Nor did I live. I became undead, forever.
- Find Strahd's twelfth journal entry †On a rock on the western edge of the lake, west of the large southern island
- I have studied much since then. "Vampyr" is my new name. I still lust for life and youth, and I curse the living that took them from me. Even the sun is against me.
- Find Strahd's thirteenth journal entry †Between the north road to van Richten's Tower and the lake north of Vallaki, on a pedestal
- It is the sun and the light I fear the most, but little else can harm me now. Even a stake through the heart does not kill me, though it holds me from movement. But the sword, that cursed sword that Sergei brought! I must dispose of that awful tool! I fear and hate it as much as the sun.
- Find Strahd's fourteenth journal entry †On a platform on the coast west of the northwestern island in Lake Vallaki or on a stump west of there, or on the most northern small island at the lake of Vallaki
- I have often hunted for Tatyana. I have even felt her within my grasp, but she escapes. She taunts me! What will it take to bend her love to me?
- Find Strahd's fifteenth journal entry †East of van Richten's Tower, deep in the woods
- I now reside far below Ravenloft. I live among the dead and sleep beneath the very stones of this hollow castle of despair. I shall seal shut the walls of the stairs that none may disturb me.

1st to 15th
- 1st †On an outcropping behind van Richten's Tower or on boxes behind the guide - I had a dream once when I was a girl. In it I prayed to the Morninglord to show me my love. Then, from the east, came a great bird - an eagle flying on wings of blinding light, soaring high above the mountains. Just as this beautiful creature was about to land at my feet, I woke up. And when I woke I wept.
- 2nd †A bit after the crossroad at the way to the Tsolenka Pass - I knew once this dream was about the man I would marry someday. And so I waited for my love, biding my time with the distractions of the young - dances and parties and long summer afternoons lazing in the sunshine.
- 3rd †On a small rock outcropping on the northwest side of the road to the Tsolenka Pass - Then Strahd van Zarovich arrived in Barovia. He came as a conqueror, at the head of a vast army. He saw our valley and decided to stay. He even began building a castle as splendid as any in the Vistani's stories. And people wondered - what would make such a man linger here, so deep in the mountains?
- 4th †High up on the road to the Tsolenka Pass, overlooking the valley of the Wizards of the Wine - He saw me in the village during the market fair. From that day on, Strahd pursued me. Oh, he was very proper and polite. He said all the right things to Mama and Papa and the Bishop. But I could see from the very start that he meant to make me his.
- 5th †High up on the road to the Tsolenka Pass, overlooking Yester Hill - Of course I was impressed with Strahd. Who wouldn't be? He had seen and done so much. And he was so mysterious, disappearing for weeks at a time to who knows where. Yet when I looked at Strahd I saw a conqueror, a builder, a ruler. As hard as I looked, I couldn't see the shining eagle from my dream.
- 6th †On the road east of the Krezk Vistani Camp, or on the riverbank west of the nearby bridge to the abbey - Strahd invited me to his castle and it was magnificent. And yet I had no eyes for Strahd or his castle, only for the one I first met there. Sergei von Zarovich had come from afar to live with his brother, and found me instead. It woudn't do for us to be seen together anywhere near the castle. So Sergei and I used to meet at a little shrine out near the Abbey and watch the summer sunlight dance on the waters of the pool
- 7th †Close to the Vistani Camp in the south of the Village of Krezk - They were brothers but they could not have been more different. Sergei was everything Strahd was not. Sergei was warm, open, young. Strahd was remote, unyielding, older. Sergei would joke and flirt, while Strahd just lectured. When news of their mother's death arrived, Sergei wept openly before everyone in the castle hall. Strahd fled to his chamber to sulk. Is it a surprise that I was drawn to the younger brother?
- 8th †Close to the shrine, south east of the Wizards of Wines - So we fell in love. They say that love is complicated but ours was as simple and as sure as the sunrise. Sergei was my light and I was his, so we arranged to be married. Mama was happy, Papa was happy, the Bishop was happy. Strahd was not.
- 9th †Close to the bridge, just before the village of Krezk - Everyone could see that Strahd was unhappy with our engagement. I tried to talk to him. I told him that he would always be part of our lives. I called him "brother". he fled without saying a word, his face as dark as night.
- 10th †Short before the T cross to the south of Village of Krezk - When he learned that Sergei and I were engaged, Strahd vanished for many days. No one knew where he went, only that he rode far to the west. I was too busy preparing for the wedding to think of what this might mean.
- 11th †South on the way to the Village of Krezk - The night before my wedding I had another dream. In it I prayed to the Morninglord to show me my love. And from the west flew a great beast - a huge black creature, so large that its wings blotted out the sun. Darkness spread over the mountains and the valleys, covering them in eternal night.
- 12th †Just right on the cliff at the outer walls of the Village of Krezk - I tried to forget my dream. After all, it was my wedding day. So I put on my dress and began to do my hair. Then a servant came, tears streaming down her eyes. When I asked her what was wrong, she told me that Sergei had been killed.
- 13th †On a barrel, behind a house in the south west side of the Village of Krezk - I asked the servant who had killed him, though I was already sure of the answer. "Strahd," she said, her voice filled with fear. And in my heart I could feel the beating of black wings.
- 14th †North west in the Village of Krezk or behind the cemetery in the south west - So I wait for Strahd to come. The light of my life is gone forever. The monster who killed him has every advantage - wealth, power, an entire army at his command. Still I must remember that I control my own fate.
- 15th †At the west-most portion of the map southwest of the Village of Krezk, on a small stone near the south bank of the river - He's coming now. I can hear the guards shouting in the stairwell. When I look down over the wall I can see nothing below but mist. And I'm afraid., I don't deny it. But I am certain of one thing. Strahd will never have me.

- Find Ireena's first journal entry †on the Road to Barovia :
- What's the first thing I remember? it must be Papa, calling out my name. "Ireena!" he'd shout whener I wandered too far away from his side. When I was little, I thought he was just being silly. Now I know what he felt. He was afraid.
- Find Ireena's second journal entry †on a small table behind the houses next to the Death House , or on a stone post north of Death House:
- It's not that my childhood was hard. The villagers tipped their caps to Papa and called him "Burgomaster". I lived in a fine house with a father and brother who loved me. Yet something was missing, something I can't describe or explain. As grateful as I am for my family and my home, sometimes at night I can't help but feel that none of it is mine.
- Find Ireena's third journal entry †south west side of Village Barovia, behind the house, or on a grave of The Village of Barovia cemetery:
- I grew up here in the village, in shabby old Barovia. And ever since I can remember, its people have never seemed quite right to me. Papa burned bright with life, my brother Ismark too. But the others in the village: most of them just flickered, as if they were barely there.
- Find Ireena's fourth journal entry †on tree stump close to the first bridge , or west of the bridge on a rock in the middle of the stream :
- Castle Ravenloft looks down on the village, watching us all. As a girl I always wondered who lived up in that splendid building on the hill. But when I asked the grownups about the castle, they told me to mind my business, or else I'd bring the curse of the demon Strahd down upon us.
- Find Ireena's fifth journal entry †north of the gallows , or on a stone at the riverside after first bridge :
- I had so many questions, but I learned not to ask: not to ask why the doors were barred at night, not to ask why I couldn't go into the forest, not to ask what had happened to my friends who vanished without a trace. "Always stay close to your home, little one," they told me. "And fear the devil Strahd above all."
- Find Ireena's sixth journal entry †south of the second bridge, close to the mountains :
- Sometimes at night I'd dream of a world of light, a world where the sun blazed like a bonfire instead of hiding behind the mists. In my dream, I'd walk through the warm sunlight to a little pond. Suddenly, I'd realize that someone was missing, someone who was supposed to be there. And then I would wake up to the cold and the dark.
- Find Ireena's seventh journal entry †small jetty right of the bridge after the Vistani Camp, or in the woods north of the second bridge :
- One day, when I was grown, I went to the marketplace to buy some lamb for dinner. There I was, chatting away with the butcher when I suddenly realized that everyone else had gone silent. They were all staring at a tall man in expensive clothes who had just arrived in the square. And this man: he was staring at me. That was the first time I saw Count Strahd von Zarovich.
- Find Ireena's eighth journal entry †Half way from the second bridge to the first gate, right hand side in the woods or on a stump to the left of the road :
- The night after I went to the marketplace, the Count himself appeared at our door. He called me "Tatyana" and said he'd come to see me. Papa and Ismark were terrified. I was not. This was the demon that kept the entire valley paralyzed with fear? He looked like just a man to me. But then Strahd looked at me. I saw the blazing hunger in his eyes: and then I remembered no more.
- Find Ireena's ninth journal entry †Already in viewing distance of the first gate, right hand side of the road :
- Later, they told me that Strahd bit me, like an animal. I have no memory of this, though the holes in my flesh showed it was true. I remember only darkness, and dreams where I ran and ran and then fell. When I awoke, they told me that I had been in a fit that lasted for three days. Papa said he thought that I would die.
- Find Ireena's tenth journal entry †Left side from the road, just before the T cross before the first gate :
- Then he bit me a second time. Our neighbors tell me that Strahd came here. But I don't remember it, and neither does Papa or Ismark. I just remember waking up on the floor, with blood on my neck and the front door open. What can be done to defend against this kind of dark magic?
- Find Ireena's eleventh journal entry †Right side of the first gate , or on a rock south of the road leading to the Castle:
- I could see that Papa was afraid, and not just of Strahd. People in the village started to whisper that they did not want me here. But I would not leave Papa. I would not leave our home.
- Find Ireena's twelfth journal entry †On the hills overlooking the way up to the Castle, on a stone altar :
- I vowed that Strahd would not have me, and Papa agreed. To keep the demon at bay, we barricaded ourselves inside our home. So Strahd sent his servants for us instead. Night after night the wolves came and beat against our door. Their howls kept us awake until we thought we would go mad from the lack of sleep.
- Find Ireena's thirteenth journal entry †Tree stump, half way from the road of the first gate to the Castle , or a rock on the left side of the road:
- Papa died on the seventh night. His heart couldn't take the strain, poor thing. Ismark and I thought that Strahd would surely attack in force. But no wolves came that night: and indeed, no wolves have come since. Maybe Strahd is giving us time to bury our dead, treating us like honored opponents on the battlefield. Or maybe he knows he has already won.
- Find Ireena's fourteenth journal entry †Vista fireplace on the way to the Castle , or a bit of rubble on the right side of the road:
- Now we wait. We wait for Strahd to come a third time, we wait for the darkness to take me at last. Ismark has given into despair since Papa's death. He says he does not believe Strahd can ever be stopped. I try to be more optimistic, but it becomes harder with each day. One thing I know for certain: if I am to resist Strahd, I cannot do it alone.
- Find Ireena's fifteenth journal entry †On a grave high up on the way to the castle , or on some rubble beneath the Castle's bridge:
- Last night I dreamed of the light again. This time a man stood in the sun by the pond, a man I had never seen before. He held up his hand, and in it was a sword that blazed with light. He told me that night was ending, and help would come with dawn. When I woke up it was still dark, and I could hear the wind howling outside. But this time I could feel a warmth within me. A light that refused to go out.
