Sunrise is the 4th quest in The Light of the Land story arcStory arcs are chains of quests that make up a story line.
Completing everything in a story arc often yields a nice reward.

Overview

Ireena Kolyana thinks the legendary Sunsword may be the key to defeating Strahd. Explore the Abbey of Saint Markovia and find the Sunsword. Then meet Ireena at the Shrine of the White Sun inside the Abbey grounds.

Known Traps

Trap DCs

  • Blade trap after the crest-locked door; no control panel, but there is a lever beyond them to shut them off.
  • Locked door in the root cellar with a locked chest behind it.

Tips and Misc

  • This quest contains a randomly located mysterious altar. Madam Eva might give you hints about its location.
    • The buff from this altar will disappear if you use Dimension Door, but will remain when you recall from the quest as long as you remain in the wilderness.
  • Madam Eva will draw three cards. (See below for a list of possible cards and their meaning)
  • The 1st card tells you a hint about where the Sunsword is located. Possible locations include...
  • the shepherd's field outside of the Abbey at the far end from the entrance
  • inside an ancient tomb immediately to the right of the quest entrance
  • inside a wine casket just down the steps from the Abbot
  • inside a chest in the Mongrelfolk barracks.
  • The 2nd card tells you where the Small Shrine is that gives you a temporary buff. This Shrine can be either...
  • outside the Abbey
  • inside the Abbey
  • in the surgery ward
  • in the Root Cellar.
  • The 3rd card informs you which of the three rare optionals in the quest is active. These can be...
  • Ezmerelda d'Avenir, who may spawn in the Abbey's East Wing and will help you in the battle against Strahd if you speak with her (this also grants an optional.)
  • A group of ghosts (including red-named boss Ghostly Physician) in the east wing infirmary.
  • The Lich Vladislav the Enduring in the Cold Crypt just west of Madam Eva.
  • The Tarnished Key is also in a random location outside the Abbey, but none of the Madame Eva cards refers to the Tarnished Key. The Key is either in the graveyard area, in the alley between the Abbey doors and the shepherd's pasture, in the pasture itself, or right near Otto and the door. The Tarnished Key is always located in plain sight, but surrounded by a few enemies.
  • Except the first journal all others have several spawn locations within a fixed zone:
    • #2: West Wing
    • #3: East Wing upper
    • #4: East Wing lower
    • #5: Root Cellar
  • The Explore the Abbey objective is completed after you move through the hallway in the East Wing with the Mongrelmen in the siderooms.
    • Optional: This also triggers the optional objective to "Tell the Abbot what you think of the Abbey". You can now go back to the Abbot and engage him in conversation about his actions. Chose the dialogue option, "From what I've seen so far, I think that you're insane" to trigger a fight. The Abbot will destroy the nearby shrines and shift into his corrupted Deva form. Killing him will spawn a chest that can contain named items for the quest.
  • A hatch is located in the southern room at the end of the hallway, which leads into the Root Cellar.
  • Use the lever on the right side of the room to open the gate. A group of Grim Shadows will spawn after you pull the lever. At the end of the corridor is a room with 3 doors, and more groups of Grim Shadows. One of the doors is locked and requires two crests to open. One crest can be found in this room. The eastern door leads to a room that contains the other crest, as well as Crawling Claws. The northern door is locked, but can be picked and has a locked chest with random loot (Lock DCs).
  • Past the door locked by the crests is a corridor, at the end of which is another room with a Rest and a Resurrection shrine, along with a "Dismal Shrine". The Dismal Shrine continuously spawns a Walking Corpse, which will slowly wander up the slope, every 15 seconds as long as somebody is in that section of the Abbey, until it is destroyed. The spawns seem to cap at four at a time, however. The door out of this room opens into a tunnel, at the end of which is another door leading to the Shrine of the White Sun and the end sequence for the quest.
  • The Shrine of the White Sun is in a large open area enclosed by a fence on all sides, and overlooks a pool of water. There is one door in the fenced walls, Ireena is just outside. To avoid bugging the quest and rendering it incompletable:
    • Open the door to let Ireena in but do not interact with her at all until she stops by the shrine.
    • Speak to her once stopped at the shrine to trigger a fairly long cutscene, about 1 minute. Plenty of time to buff here until Ireena/Tatiana and Sergei fade away.

Afterwards, Strahd will appear; he is much more easily damaged if dragged into the water and can only be forced here to leave. This can become problematic if Ezsmerelda, hirelings or summoned creatures have Strahd's aggro and distract him from moving into the water. When you lower his health enough he will leave and the quest will complete.

  • When Strahd is in the pool, a Holy Water debuff will be applied to him.

Possible cards from Madam Eva

Listed alphabetically, with meanings:

  • Bishop: Seek the light in the Bishop's bed. He sleeps among the monks of old.
  • Sunsword hidden in an Ancient Tomb right next to the entrance of the quest
  • Broken One: Seek the light among the broken ones. They wanted to be more than than they were. They found madness instead.
  • Sunsword location... inside abbey, east wing, downstairs, in a mongrelfolk room
  • Donjon: A blessing lies hidden here, down in the halls deep beneath.
  • The shrine is in the Root Cellar, near the Crest of the Wolf
  • Druid: A blessing lies hidden here, in the cool shadows of the trees.
  • The shrine is located in the shepherd's field
  • Ghost: I see souls who searched for peace long ago. They found torment instead.
  • This indicates the rare optional with the Ghosts has spawned in the nursery. This includes the red-named Ghostly Physician.
  • Healer: A blessing lies hidden here, where healing turned to horror.
  • The shrine is in the east wing, top floor inside the door marked Nursery.
  • Miser: Seek the light where the Abbot hoards his most precious treasures – the sun of a hundred afternoons, sealed in bottles and aged into liquid hope.
  • Sunsword hidden in Ancient Wine Casket in wine cellar of chapel headed downstairs from abbot
  • Mists: I see the enemy of your enemy. She waits for you in a room above the mists.
  • Ezmerelda's location... inside abbey, east wing, upstairs, in room past the locked door that opens with the lever.
  • Shepherd: Seek the light in the field where the shepherd tended his flock.
  • Dig up the Shepherd's Crook in the field.
  • Transmuter: A blessing lies hidden here, where flesh is forged into new forms.
  • Defense buff shrine – inside abbey, west wing, upstairs in the room with Vasika.
  • Wizard: I see a wizard who has slept through the ages. His bed is cold, and his blanket is made of marble.
  • To the right from Madam Eva, into the graveyard where the Ancient Tomb spawns, then left to the Cold Crypt. Lich fight (immunity to low level spells).
