What to Expect
Varying list of objectives
Known Traps
- Dart trap behind the secret door in the fireplace; a control panel is on the wall just inside.
- Bookshelves at the other end are incredibly musty, to the point of poisoning you. No trap control panel, just be careful getting that collectible.
Tips and Misc
This quest offers a lot of options to approach objectives and optionals. You may or may not see objectives from the list above. Also this list should be considered incomplete, too.
At the start of the quest, there is no combat on the main floor, nor most of the upstairs rooms (Fiona's secret room being the exception). By the end of the quest, after you went to the Baron's mansion and stirred things up, that will change.
For most of the locked doors a key exists somewhere. Most of these doors are also pickable.
There are three shrines, one in the tunnels and one shrine in the restrooms of the Baron's and Fiona's mansions.
- In Lady Wachter's Mansion
- Go left, chat with Lady Fiona and then Baron Vallakovich.
- (Optional) If you can unlock the door at the end of that same room, you can chat with Ernst there. He will drop a blue key and promises to aid you later. Otherwise, you may find a blue key near a well below the kitchen (southern room), via the stairs there.
- The Keepers of the Feather Patron was invited with his wife. He's not part of the quest in any way, but knows something is up.
- (Optional) You can run around the upstairs of Wachter mansion to gather some incriminating evidence against Lady Wachter.
- Just tell the servant there you are looking for the bathroom.
- There is a shrine upstairs, unlocked, behind the first door on the left.
- (Optional) Lady Wachter's daughter, Stella, is locked in an upper room, insane from an enchantment. You can restore her sanity by casting Restoration, Remove Disease, Remove Curse or Break Enchantment - this can be a direct cast, or you can use a scroll, wand, or summon a hireling that knows the spell. Surprisingly, none of Unyielding Sovereignty, Panacea, or the Heal spell will work.
- Speak to her and ask about "Lady Wachter" to get the optional.
- (Optional) Behind a secret door in the fireplace of Fiona's bedroom is a small, trapped room, with a "Sealed Chest" and a fight with skeletons. It is not a lootable chest, but using it you get the clue "The chest is filled with human bones, an adult human skull among them. Carved into its forehead are the words, "Traitor to Zarovich crown" and "Rest In Torment."".
- Doing the three things above (chatting with Ernst Larnack; finding the bones; and restoring Stella Wachter's sanity) will complete the Incriminate Lady Fiona Wachter optional.
- The end fight will be in the far north room upstairs, which then can be opened with the Jeweled Key.
Once you are done with the mansion, it's time to go downstairs.
- Underground tunnels. Abishai (Blue and Red), Orthons, and Bearded Devils await you.
- Be very wary of the many casters, especially Wachterhaus Mortifers, who love to drain levels.
- Kill cultists and devils.
- Do puzzles. Instead of lighting the points, they must all be extinguished. The star puzzles can be solved in 5 moves by touching each point exactly once (order does not matter).
- Know your Devils
- They require DR/Good if using melee weapons.
- Blue Abishais regenerate, disappearing to do so. Immune to electricity and fond of spamming Blade Barrier, they are probably the most difficult of the devils. Like Ogre Magi, try to stun them, trip them or otherwise render them helpless to beat them before they disappear.
- Devils like teleporting into the middle of the party, often targeting your casters or heavy damage dealers first. Banishment or Dismissal are both very useful contingency measures here if your DCs are high enough.
- There will be reinforcements and an ambush or two when you return from the Baron's place. Kill them again (or let Izek take a crack at a few; see below).
- In the Baron's Mansion
- The Baron's guards are formidable and numerous. Don't underestimate the archers, which often use entrapment snare spells that will immobilize you.
- If you talk to Lydia Petrovna the guards will calm down.
- Astonishingly, tyrannical buffoon that he may be, Baron Vallakovich is probably the most well-adjusted member of the Vallakovich household:
- Izek Strazni is a brute (and nearly as obsessed with Ireena as Strahd is, if the Sealed Chest full of dolls is anything to go by) – at some point in this quest you're going to need to deal with him. You can fight him directly with his troops, or you can tell him of Fiona's treachery, which makes him run into Fiona's tunnels to be ambushed. Stop your party just before entering the tunnel and Izek will take a few out before going down himself, killing several nasty birds with a nasty stone.
- On easier difficulties, Izek might survive and be waiting in the tunnels.
- The Baron's son Victor kills innocents with utter lack of concern (oh, and he's also to blame for what happened to Stella Wachter.) He is a caster that will summon rather potent water elementals in his defense.
- The Baron's wife is a Stepford-smiling murderer in reality. Near the mansion shrine is a mirror she has used to bind and summon a Shade to murder her rivals. If you have a high enough Use Magic Device skill ( ♦15-16Normal), you can read a poem on the frame and summon the Mirror Shade locked inside to return the favor.
- If you talked to Lydia earlier and pacified the guards, they will turn hostile again. Often they have gathered at the stairs, so prepare for a bulk fight.
- Back to the party
- Clear the tunnels carefully and return to Wachter's place. You will have to solve two freshly appeared puzzles, slaying as you go.
- Get the Jeweled Key in the basement to unlock the Lady's room on the 2nd floor.
- Deal with the Lady in her room. She is a caster. Get the Green party room key.
- Ernst Larnak is also in the Lady's room, assuming you didn't kill him earlier. If you accepted his help, he will assist you in the battle; otherwise, you'll need to kill him too. (It's suggested you get Ernst on your side if possible, as Lady Wachter can already prove a difficult foe on her own at high levels.)
- Lady Wachter's two sons Nikolai and Karl have been placed as guards outside the party room, which is now locked. To get in, you'll need to rough them up enough that they decide to adjourn to the Blue Water Inn.
- The siblings are entirely open to an alternative suggestion – namely, sitting this one out and getting the inheritance a couple of decades early. You won't even need a Charisma check to get them to agree to this. None of the Wachter siblings are especially fond of their mother.
- The Baron and his dogs are locked in the party room. You'll need to have words with him after eliminating Lady Wachter.
- If you did not complete all of the optionals in the Baron's household (destroy Izek, the Baron's wife, and the Baron's son), you must either make the Baron pay you off in hush-money or fight him and his two dogs.
- If you complete all of the Baron's optionals, you get extended dialogue that includes telling the Baron to get out of town, without combat. This leaves a second chest which does also drop named loot.
- Note
Sometimes Lady Wachter remains in the tunnels where she confronted you and doesn't return to the private library. You can still complete the quest, though. Once you've entered the library, she will activate; you just need to go to the tunnels to kill her and then return to the library to get the key.
