When choosing the front door approach, several levers appear in the first hall.
Tips and Misc
Welcome to The Devils to Pay! This is a completely serious quest, and in no way a jab at the American higher education system.
Calliope has sold her soul – literally – to afford Morgrave's tuition fees, which is apparently perfectly legal under Brelish business laws. You're breaking into the loan office to retrieve her soul contract.
You can either choose to go in through the front door pretending to be an auditor (no Bluff check required), or sneak in round the back. This has little effect on quest progress past the first room.
The front door route is longer, but probably a little easier – you follow fiendish loan broker Matarkeia through the offices until she gets a Sending from a potential "benefactor" and returns to her office. This route allows you to deactivate the fire traps in the upper corridor with levers.
The back door route takes you straight to the lower office, where you are jumped by Bearded Devils. (If taking this route, you'll have to either dodge the traps in the upper corridor or disarm them the traditional way, as the levers disappear.)
This puzzle unlocks the lever to the leftRegardless of which route you took, you now need to solve the tile puzzle on the wall to open the door to the archives downstairs. At this point, if you came in through the front door, the Bearded Devils attack, but in smaller waves.
The tile puzzle is hard to reach – you may need to jump on a nearby shelf to do the top row.
Head into the archives and kill Rilvos for his ledger, then find Calliope's contract and grab it.
Bug: The section of the hallway with Rilvos glitches out if you reach it too fast in the progression and him and some of the nearby Bearded Devils became invincible to all but grazing hits and spell damage.needs verification
Grabbing the contract activates a secret door on the same wall as the puzzle – behind this is the Orthon Tyrtaeos and the devils' magical quill.
Finally, head to the upper office and fight Materkeia. She will periodically become invincible and set a couple of the nearby Bearded Devils on you.
It's possible to skip waves of devils by dealing enough damage with one hit.
You can now return the soul contract to Calliope. Thanks to an uncharacteristically sloppy bit of wording on Materkeia's part, she now owns her own soul again!
