Tips and Misc
- The Esoteric Order of Aureon, an exclusive club for rich wizards ("rich", naturally, being the key word), has gotten its hands on the Inkwell of Aureon, a unique magical artefact that might be able to erase the troublesome Codex's sentience for good. Of course, in classically unhelpful fashion, the Order has refused to lend the Inkwell to Morgrave. The solution: thievery.
- Your contact, one Alfred Rourke, is in the courtyard. He warns you that the Order's tower has pretty tight security, and that a stealthy option might be advisable. (And, of course, it'll net you a bunch of optional XP.)
- First, you need to get into the tower. You have three options here. You may be able to pick a locked grate (Lock DC), or convince NPC Gwendolyn Beckford to open the door with a couple of skill checks (Bluff DC 89 (epic elite) or Intimidate DC 89 (epic elite) followed by Haggle DC 89 (epic elite) or Diplomacy DC 89 (epic elite). Note, there is no penalty for failure of these checks.) Otherwise, you'll need to head round to a climbable bunch of ivy and take a vent into the tower storerooms.
- The vent route is the slowest, and takes you through a couple of otherwise skippable fights, but there are a lot of breakables on the route.
- You are now into the main tower! Take note of the following:
- Each room contains security guards. If you fall or walk in, after a few seconds, one will go for a lever that triggers the alarms. The alarm will also trigger if you activate or attack a Watcher Construct in the rafters.
- When the alarms go off, all doors lock for a few seconds, and guards begin to respawn from blue circles in the larger rooms.
- Once you complete a room, you can bind to a nearby checkpoint. If you do so, and then fall into that room, you teleport back to the checkpoint and the guards are not alerted. Note that you can only have one checkpoint at a time, and they expire after five minutes. Certain checkpoints stop working if the alarm is triggered.
- If you ever get stuck on the lower floor, go to the room marked "Front Elevator" and jump up the pillars.
- To start with, you're going to want to head along northwest, to the room marked "Front Elevator", and hop into the grate. (To get to many mandatory areas in this quest, a moderate Jump skill is required - the necessary score is somewhere in the range 8-25. If you're unsure if your score is enough, pick up a Jump potion.) Send one person to jump, or run, through the force beams and pull the lever at the end to deactivate them.
- A hidden door in this room contains a solution to an upcoming puzzle (4, 6, 2, 3, 8, 5, 7, 1) – don't bother with this, because this solution isn't unique and is nowhere near the quickest.
- Now grab the silver key and head to the locked grate in the alchemy lab. There are two puzzles you'll need to solve here – a simple mirror puzzle, and a button puzzle. The button puzzle is the one referred to by the earlier note, but you can just hit all of the buttons once and it'll work just as well (just start at any of the buttons and follow the lines around.)
- Remember – don't touch blue beams unless you like being Disintegrated!
- The lever next to the button puzzle will reset all the buttons.
- Pull the purple lever behind the blue beams in the centre and head to the Lounge, where you can now enter your third and final grate.
- You now have three directions to go: North, South and East. South is locked to start with.
- The east door takes you to the floor puzzle – four small tile puzzles, to be exact.
- Head North to the lab and clear out the security forces and Cranium Rats. Then pull the lever and head south.
- You can now head up to the tower's top floor. A nearby lever opens a secret door to allow latecomers to skip the earlier sections.
- Head through another set of purple beams and fight off an ambush by Hidden Hand agents. (Apparently they just climbed in through a window, which would have saved a lot of bother.)
- In the next room is a maze of red beams. Avoid touching the walls here, as they deal Force damage over time. Find your way to the central room and pull a lever to open the door at the other end.
- A locked chest is in one of the corners of the room.
- Before you can get your hands on the Inkwell, you must face one more challenge: a swarm of Dretches, Bearded Devils, and two red-named Vrocks. Afterwards, take the Dimension Door out of the tower and escape with the Inkwell of Aureon.
