Description
A bank of heavy yellowish green, poisonous fog rises up, slaying weak targets within the cloud, or inflicting damage on stronger targets:
- Creatures with 3 or less Hit Dice die instantly, no save
- Creatures with 4, 5 or 6 Hit Dice must succeed on a Fortitude save or die
- Creatures with 7 or more Hit Dice take 2d6 acid damage plus 1 damage per caster level - Maximum damage 2d6+20 at CL20 and 1d4 Constitution damage every 2 seconds. Constitution damage and Acid damage is halved on a successful Fortitude save.
- Creatures immune to poison are undamaged by this spell. This includes all purple-named; however many red-named do take both acid and (up to 10 points of) Constitution damage from Cloudkill provided they don't otherwise have poison immunity via their creature type.
Additionally this fog obscures sight, giving all creatures in the fog concealment (attackers have 20% miss chance). This portion of the spell affects all enemies, including red and purple named.
Notes:
- Cloudkill is a useful spell to use against most raid bosses as it's 20% concealment bonus does work on purple named. Though it won't deal any damage due to bosses' poison immunity, its long duration and useful debuff portion makes it a very desirable spell.
- Cloudkill does not have any initial tic like Wall of Fire. Enemies must remain it in for at least 2 seconds for it to deal damage.
- The duration is capped at caster level 20 like the damage. Maximum of 80 seconds.
- Metamagics Empower, Maximize and Extend do not apply to Cloudkill. (This is very unusual as Empower and Maximize apply to almost every other damage dealing spell in the game.)
