From DDO wiki

Forums: Index > Village pump > 2013 project for the wiki

just to get a quick glance at whats going on right now.

  • Home page RSS
    • not seeing any complaint - looking good then?
  • Event pages  overhaul
    • my personal project, they were quite a mess, IP though progress is rather slow
  • Monsters and monster manual
    • Susalona and Nibelung's project (?), monster section of the wiki now has 10 times more info, its awesome.
    • noticed some categories are getting messy in this regard too, i.e. Monsters with image etc meta category really all that needed now?
    • in the end, i think its the same issue with item category bleeding - auto-cat functions on some templates are going wild. we are gonna have to tame em up a little bit. any thoughts how we gonna do all that effectively?
  • Outdated contents
    • i think some of the major changes made this year still not covered on the wiki
      • AC/to-hit revamp on U14
      • EN/EH/EE thingy on U14
      • post U14 random gen item mechanics - what effect are what levels, what + is the maximum you can get on random item etc.
      • challenge pay to win mechanic (noticed recently, its a minor one noone cares but still,) - Talk:Challenges/Temporary_buffs
      • and such, any other stuff?

im sure i missed many things, feel free to add your thoughts too OFC.

  • Still working on Item: Namespace project, just finished up one semester in school, about to start another. Probably about 3-4 weeks I'll take another big swing at it and knock out another chunk.
  • I've wanted to make some modifications to the Recent Changes RSS/Atom feed, which is different from the launcher feed you guys are talking about, but haven't been able to figure out where those system messages or whatever drives/formats them are.
  • Current format is "[[$1]]\nBy $2"
  • I am hoping to make it more like "At $3, $4, $2, $5:\n[[$1]]"
    • $1 is the name of the page.
    • $2 is the editor of the page.
    • $3 is the time of the edit.
    • $4 is the date of the edit.
    • $5 is the action of the edit.
      • Edited
      • Created
      • Deleted
      • Moved
      • Protected
      • Etc...
  • Auto-cat in templates... Just point me to the templates, and I'll take a look. I'm sure I can come up with something. If they're item effect templates, then they are already on my list of to-fix with Item: Namespace. Only need to point out "other" templates...
  • BlackSmith (Contribs • Message) was really driving me nuts with whatever he was trying to do. I think a more defined policy might be needed.

These are just my responses to your list... I'm sure I can add a few things of my own when I have a few minutes to clear my mind and think about it. Big Grin

Everything's looking good. I personally don't care for the 100% width on the RSS feed, looks like a giant banner ad, IMO... I tinkered with it in my sandbox a little while back, but didn't want to step on any toes implementing it (squishing boxes around on the home page and what-not). Let me know what y'all think.

  • The part of the Item: Namespace project that is visible to end users is done. I still need to do some background work and cleanup all of the "What links here" pages, but that is on hold until I get Internet back at hame and can run the bot.
  • MediaWiki date tagging (Template:GameRevisionDates, MediaWiki:GameRevisionDates) project is completed.
  • Auto-cat in templates... Just point me to the templates, and I'll take a look. I'm sure I can come up with something. If they're item effect templates, then they are already on my list of to-fix with Item: Namespace. Only need to point out "other" templates...
  • BlackSmith (Contribs • Message) is still driving me nuts with whatever he tries to do. I have chatted with him a bit on IRC, and I understand that most of my frustration is a language barrier and I am working to understand and try and make everything work well for everyone as best as can reasonably be done. I think a more defined policy still needs to be made.

These are just my responses to your list... I'm sure I can add a few things of my own when I have a few minutes to clear my mind and think about it (which I never seem to have, checking out my todo page is always a good place to look). Tongue

It confuses me why this page exists in the first place. Is there some kind of time limit for these topics or why multiple subjects are taken from their native talk space? This is summary of village pump topics from 2013, but why try to keep the discussion open in multiple pages? It only results in missed messages and confusion.

OT: What I try to do? I answered in December 12th 2012 at Category_talk:Server: "For the OT part: I am trying and succeeding in Wikiying the articles, cleaning them up, updating with info, putting them in to right categories, and so on. Thanks for looking after grammar mistakes." Idea of this place is to be a wiki. Wiki has pages that cower one topic trough out, these are called articles. Article can be long or short, abut it has to stay on topic. Categories collect articles corresponding to the categories name or purpose, but should _rarely_ inhold information of their own as it is not those pages job. I am also fighting a organisation that rather has pages and content that are against the policy they self say to follow and I can't use reasoning or facts because they are neglected. At least that is what I feel more and more.

I have tried to find the groundings for this namespace project from the talk pages and the village pump without success. Only reasoning seems to be that the templates categories articles wrong. Instead of fixing templates, a new namespace is introduced and apparently forced also, without any policy backing it up. A policy that would be grounded and sound. The problem with auto categorization by templates comes from the fact that some templates are used for displaying information and some for displaying information AND categorization. The roll up templates or similar that show additional information were to be used just for that and templates like T:Quest and so on were only allowed to do automatic categorization. Rule of thumb, if the template is protected, it is allowed to auto-cat. Otherwise not. That was how it was planed and structured.

If you say that the categories don't need a major overhaul I would be interested to hear why its ok there is so many combination categories, so many category pages containing information that should be in the article page, why so many categories have sub categories that don't belong to be there and why each time there is a reasoning presented that some categorization is wrong, it is reverted without groundings? Lets take a simple and recent example. Alignment is member of c:Alignment. A category that shows "List of alignments found in DDO.". Alignment is not a Alignment itself, thus it should not be member of the category. Members C:servers should be servers. Now it has range of various articles but none that can be described as a server. So where is the page that lists all the servers? Because it is not C:servers. What about all items that has Holy Burst ability? It sure ain't C:Holy bursting. What about all greatswords in the game? There is none, because the category is wrongly named to Great Swords. There is no proficiency to Great Sword but to a greatsword. So where do you get the proficiency to this Great Sword then because it sure ain't a martial weapon or it does not even use Martial Weapon Proficiency? Yes, we are aware that the game uses wrong names for the items on many, many palces, but the fact is that proficiency define what weapons you can use. We can use the incorrect/bugged part from the game or the correct one that it will be fixed. Same thing with longsword, greataxe greatclub and so on. Frankly, I am perplexed how one can say the categories are ok when opening any item page the bottom of the page tells already that how big mess they are.
