Talk:Quests with Beholders

But... Why?[edit]

Why do we need this page when we have Beholder race and Beholder race monsters  that both automatically update themselves?  👟 ShoeMaker ( Talk • Contribs • Patrol • Moves • B • D • I • PP • UM • UR ) 👟 20:39, March 17, 2023 (EDT)

  • If I remember correctly, the Discord user was after a page containing only Beholders with Anti-magic Cone. Beholder race doesn't give any locations, only the monster names, and Beholder race monsters includes quite a few Beholders that don't have Anti-magic Cone and are thus much easier for casters to deal with. The closest thing we have is the page for Anti-magic Cone, but even that only gives monster names, not locations.
Possibly this isn't the most pressing thing we need to have on the wiki, but I certainly would have found it useful a couple of years ago, and since I will be keeping it up to date for the foreseeable future, I can't see any harm in keeping it around for the few people that would find it helpful. • Plus, there might well be a way to automate this, but this would mean leaving out the comments indicating how many Beholders there are, which strikes me as something that could be quite helpful for people trying to plan one of these quests. • If they're specifically looking for beholders related to Anti-magic cone, this information should be part of that page and not it's own page. As far as automating it goes, we can use parameters in templates that don't exist for the purposes of DPL to parse the information out (I've seen another page, Devil Assault (quest) doing it to work with {{Quest list}} to show the quest level is 6/12/18 at a |step=6 instead of the normal 6/7/8 at a step of 1, and there's no reason not to). That will allow you to make a note for each such as {{{anti-magic_cone_#|Seven Elder Beholders and multiple regular Beholders}}} where # is the habitat number.  👟 ShoeMaker ( Talk • Contribs • Patrol • Moves • B • D • I • PP • UM • UR ) 👟 10:24, March 18, 2023 (EDT)
  • Look, if you want to move this list to Anti-magic Cone, fine, but considering that we already have an up-to-date list, why bother with DPL automation? It'll be just as much work moving forwards and editing information will be less convenient because if you want to add multiple new habitats you have to go and add the parameter to multiple quest pages rather than edit one centralised list. Plus, it means the list can be edited by somebody who doesn't understand how your proposal works (which, if we implemented it, would be pretty much every editor except you and me at this point.) There isn't a precedent to use DPL here, so we shouldn't make things more complicated than they need to be. PurpleSerpent (ContribsMessage) 12:01, March 18, 2023 (EDT)
