Whitespace[edit]
In the case of HTML, whitespace is largely ignored - whitespace in between words is treated as a single character, and whitespace at the start and end of elements and outside elements is ignored. HTML collapses serial whitespaces to a single whitespace, but doesn't eliminate it. A newline is a whitespace, therefore a space.
For example let's say you typed the following line (with all those spaces) into the Wiki editing box:
I killed mothers with their babies. I've killed great philosophers, proud young warriors, and revolutionaries. I've killed the evil, the good, the intelligent, the weak, and the beautiful.
Would be rendered as thus (ignore the indent):
- I killed mothers with their babies. I've killed great philosophers, proud young warriors, and revolutionaries. I've killed the evil, the good, the intelligent, the weak, and the beautiful.
As you can see it collapses the whitespace. It's generally considered poor practice to use double spacing after the period. Were you trying to preserve whitespace and format the sentence layout or something?

- In this one particular case, having a double space between each full stop and the beginning of the next sentence is necessary to avoid breaking the popups on Message from Elminster. When the page was originally created, a bunch of broken wikitext appeared on the page between popups 1 and 2 - I added the whitespace to fix this, because I noticed other pages (see Message from Elminster/33 that did the same thing didn't suffer the issue. ⇒ PurpleSerpent (Contribs • Message • Email) 09:15, March 17, 2022 (EDT)

- Well, I was going to say; if it were the serial whitespaces influencing, it'd be certainty a bug with Wiki or something malformed like a poorly written template, etc. ;-)
