Template talk:DisableDevice DC

Why make this? Is it significantly different from {{Roll result}}?  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 21:56, February 7, 2020 (EST)

It will be significantly different because it will calculate the possible DC range from the parameters entered without printing unnecessary ranges like the fail range. It will also have every parameter optional so the template is easier to use. The goal is to make entering trap DCs as easy as possible so people enter values instead of just leaving comments with their observations. Once I've completed this template I'll make a small demonstration page showing what I mean.

As a small example showing what I mean try entering only a critical fail value and no other value to the Roll result template:

(Critical) Failure: (10) 5-{{{fu}}}
Success: ?

The DDOip DC template produces this under the same trial:

( 15 )

Instead I'd like the output to be:

15-?

  • Then why not edit the existing template to display the way you want it to in the sandbox for it?  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 09:08, February 8, 2020 (EST)

I wasn't sure of the scope of the roll result template so I couldn't test all of the effects of any changes. I was also attempting to minimize the footprint of my changes. If I changed roll result to display like I want then most of the trap DC pages will have a redundant column until they are updated. As of now the possible DC range has been manually typed in in most cases. Finally, the roll result template is effective at showing the work of arriving at the DC range and it would be a shame to lose that functionality.

My reasoning for not updating the DDOip DC template was similar. It's hard to update the template when I'm not sure where and how it's being used. However, when I get home from work, I'll move my work to that sandbox. Once I have a working version of the template in the sandbox we can decide if it's worthy to replace the existing template. Thank you for your input! :) Kkoliver (ContribsMessage) 13:22, February 8, 2020 (EST)

This template can be deleted because I'll update the DDOip DC template instead. Kkoliver (ContribsMessage) 18:41, February 11, 2020 (EST)
