Talk:OTWF/rapier vs TWF/Kukri for Finesse Rogue

So, playing a Finesse/TWF build, especially for rogues, the rapiers seems to be the dominant weapon that people discuss. Easy to see why.

Until I look at the Kukri. For 1 point less average damage, I get EVERYTHING the same (except switch from piercing to slashing) and it's light. Instead of taking Oversized TWF and dual-rapier, why not just go dual Kukri and save a feat (or take another feat that adds more damage).

Are Kukris particularly rare? Or is slashing damage notably worse than piercing somehow? If there's not some other factor at work here, I'd think dual-kukris would have a teeny-tiny damage disadvantage vs dual-rapiers (especially later in the game), but for saving a feat, that sounds like a cheap price to pay. Heck, if you aren't taking one of the damage-type-specific feats, you could go rapier/kukri, even.

Am I missing something?

Rogues don't have proficiency in kukri's, you'd have to spend a feat or carry a stack of master's touch scrolls. 198.236.64.25 13:39, June 16, 2011 (EDT)

Oh, duh - thanks. I splashed Ranger - so if you're splashing Ranger for the TWF (or otherwise have martial weapon profs), then kukri seems to make a lot of sense, but pure rogue wouldn't have that. "TWF finesse build with martial profs" would definitely be a small enough niche to merit rapier being the weapon usually discussed. (That said, rogue/ranger builds seem pretty common...)

Question answered - thanks!

I don't believe any class has proficiency in kukris, you could always add a level of Wizard or Sorcerer, Master's Touch is level 1, and it would get rid of any UMD requirements if you used scrolls and weren't building a UMD rogue. UMDing scrolls is another option. You could also stock up during the winter on Shavarath, the Battleground Jelly Cake = Master's Touch Caster Level 15. Slashing damage is actually more effective than piercing. My Rogue when not using one of her repeating crossbows wields a combination of dual daggers, rapiers, or shortswords..
