So, I'm not sure how to "Properly" test this, but I think - and by that i'm 100% sure that - the feat has now been changed to factually be just a +1[w]. That's no longer a die step up.

I'd rather get my 9[1d8]9/72 rolls then 10[1d6] 10/60.

I'm thinking a specific note to this should be made on the page it self after figuring out if other players report the same behavior with their PL. This changed some time before MOTU I'm afraid. With U19 one can now gain the 1d8 die step through the Shintao Tree, Empty Handed mastery.

I think it might even be worst than that, and actually be +0.5[W]. This feat used to mimic the monk step up base damage it had before MotU. If the mechanic to the feat followed the change to the unarmed damage, it should be 0.5[W].

Easiest way to test this is removing every gear you have (including wraps), and punch the dummy until you can see all the non-crit variance in damage you have. Doing some math after that can show you if it is 4[1d6] (4-24 + mods) or 3.5[1d8] (3-28 + mods)
