[edit] Summary

Well, it seems that Turbine-DDO forgot to renew their domain name.. Ooops..

   Record expires on 14-Jun-2012.
   Record created on 26-Aug-2004.

   Domain servers in listed order:

   NS1.PENDINGRENEWALDELETION.COM 205.178.190.51
   NS2.PENDINGRENEWALDELETION.COM 206.188.198.51

It is claimed to have been renewed and all good to go; however, the renewal may take up to 48 hours to take effect. If you are a die hard player, this may be unacceptable, and there are some work arounds. First, let's check to see if your ISP has updated their list. This is the best and least complicated patch option.

To do this, you must:
{Start} → search for "cmd.exe" → right click → run as administrator → ipconfig /flushdns [Enter]

Then you may try to load the game. If that works for you, stop here and go have fun playing. Otherwise, the next thing to try is to add a pointer to Google's domain which has updated for ddo and may act like a repeater to get you in. To do this:
{Start} → search for "notepad.exe" → right click → run as administrator → [Ctrl]-[o] → In the box that says 'Filename' type "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" where 'C' is your hard drive (may be another letter, but it is 'C' 95% of the time, and if it was something else, you probably would know it). → click the 'Open' button → now, at the bottom of the page add '8.8.4.4' and 8.8.8.8 so that it looks something like:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#	127.0.0.1 localhost
#	::1             localhost
8.8.4.4 # Google
8.8.8.8 # Google

Now you will need to press [Ctrl]-[s] → click 'File' ⇒ 'Exit' → {Start} → search for "cmd.exe" → right click → run as administrator → ipconfig /flushdns [Enter]

Then you may try to load the game. If that works for you, stop here and go have fun playing. Otherwise, the next thing to try is to add pointers to DDO's servers directly. A warning about this, you WILL want to remove this in a couple days once everything is back to normal (or at least comment it out in case you still have a problem). or you may run into issues again later. To add pointers directly to the DDO servers:
{Start} → search for "notepad.exe" → right click → run as administrator → [Ctrl]-[o] → In the box that says 'Filename' type "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" where 'C' is your hard drive (may be another letter, but it is 'C' 95% of the time, and if it was something else, you probably would know it). → click the 'Open' button → now, at the bottom of the page you will need to add some lines to make your file look like:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

[edit] Discussion

All post have been moved to the bottom of the page to allow instructions to be placed at the header for correcting the issue with the DDo client and websites.

I do apologize for moving you all but the issue at hand is the main concern and i did not delete any post that have been entered.
 thanks for your cooperation

Allright People. Words the Reikaz here

oh and the Lamania is a private server. we dont have the server information for that one just yet so we cant update that on the host file. now on to the real stuff....

If you want to do the workaround for accessing DDO while you wait for your ISP to fix the issues. do the following

For a video guide: http://youtu.be/8G8tVRV4Z3g

1 you'll need to locate your host file under C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc

2 right click on the file called "host" then go to security and hit the edit button

3 in this page click the box for full access then hit apply.

4 OK now that you've done that go to your notepad right click and select open as admin

5 now click file then open and go find that host file again

6 one you have it open you'll see basic info in there

7 if there is nothing in there but the example info then look below all the words to see if there is a list that starts with

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1       localhost

8 if there is then make sure not to copy over any information in there

note) you may need to copy the entire file as is and save that under a text document called host file backup. this can be used after your isp has fixed the issue. all you will need to do is copy the information out of it and re post over the information you will soon be adding into the file...

9 either way copy this info into the file underneath the local host ip address

	74.201.102.13 gls-auth-lm.ddo.com#

	74.201.102.43 my.ddo.com#

10 Once you have done this click file then save. close down the client as well as your internet then try to open the launcher client for DDO again everything should be working just fine

Side note:: Make sure you do NOT add a # sign at the beginning of the ip address lines or else the dos file thinks you're leaving a comment instead of an actual ip address.

If this method doesn't work for you then you're doing something wrong. This is a culmination of all the advice given above condensing it down to step by step instructions for the technologically illiterate people out there. (not being mean but yes there are a few...

Thanks for all the comments and enjoy the game everyone

ps. As another side note this may not completley refresh the issue with the website and some editing in that part will need to be done but to log onto the game via the client this information does resolve that issue.

Erm some idiot I believe didn't renew the dns/domain server. - Nenethairstorm

yep, looks like it. however theres a workaround for accessing website. go to %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, open it up with a text editor, and add these lines.

I doubt they forgot it, its more likely someone hacked some DNS server/mirror as http://www.whois.com shows the correct expiration date in 2017! SisAmethyst (ContributionsMessage)
That isn't what it said this morning. The expiration date was 6/14/2012, probably with a couple day grace period. It looks like they are starting to get things back on track. -- Annon user

worked for me. no guarantee though. maybe try this too, Start → run → /cmd → ipconfig /flushdns.

--yoko5000 (ContributionsMessage) 07:56, June 16, 2012 (EDT)

Yes it works for me too. --halindar
Did not work here, whatever changes I make in this file they never work. --dydzio
Called and spoke with network solutions. They said the domain is good until 2017 so its not a matter of it not being renewed. --guest

try add a # behind the domain name of every line you add, such as:

74.201.102.11 patch.ddo.com#
74.201.102.13 gls.ddo.com#
74.201.102.13 gls-auth.ddo.com#

otherwise the hosts file might get a little confused - Cj

Got a response from Turbine support, they are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it as soon as possible. Since it is DNS related caching at ISPs will impact the rate at which it is resolved for different users in different area's. Some users are still able to log in because their DNS record cache has not yet expired. --halindar

After making the changes in the host file do you need to restart windows? Do you still use the launcher to enter the game? - 167pilot

Make sure your hosts file isn't marked read-only. Some programs such as Spybot S&D mark it as such. Right-click the hosts file -> Properties and make sure the read-only box isn't checked. If it is, uncheck it and hit Apply. Then edit it however you want. It should save the changes then. Just make sure to re-mark it read-only (a good tip anyway).

Thank god it worked for me.

I wrote # after all the domain names (but not in localhosts line) and now I am able to connect to game. and I used two spacebars between domain name and IP adress. --dydzio

What do you mean open it with a text editor? Can this be explained for the computer illiterate?

Right click on the file, select 'open as' and choose notepad. By the way you still use launcher to run the game and you do not have to restart the PC. Make sure the file is saved after you do changes in it. --dydzio

This is what my file looks like. Using launcher still does not work.. Any ideas? -- 167pilot

The Facebook is working, if you want to go read dozens of "The launcher isn't working for me, how do I fix it?" and "Does anyone know why I can't log into the game" type posts: https://www.facebook.com/DDOUnlimited (The Kobold Still Hate you post is priceless) -- AZGreentea

for the computer illiterate like me, and/or using windows7/vista:

  • Go to start button and then to Notebook. Don't open it but right-click and select "open as admin"
  • This will open the Notebook with adminrights. Now go to the File tab, then "Open" and go find the file we need WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
  • When the "Hosts" file is opened you need to copy-paste all lines for ingame and forum access:
74.201.102.43 www.ddo.com

74.201.102.42 forums.ddo.com

74.201.102.11 patch.ddo.com

74.201.102.13 gls.ddo.com

74.201.102.13 gls-auth.ddo.com
  • You might need to add # after each line as shown on posts above
  • When these lines are added, save it (File->Save)
  • Close the file and try to load either/both DDO site - Game Launcher

The above worked for me, i just needed the extra step to open Notebook as Admin first. --Ekeiram

An other option may be to add the official nameservers of turbine in your network setting Another option may be to add the DNS server of turbine in your network

NS2.DNS.TURBINE.COM 74.201.102.8
NS3.DNS.TURBINE.COM 74.201.102.7
NS1.DNS.TURBINE.COM 74.201.102.19

as shown here [1], but depending where you are this may slow down the connection.

Here's another tip to get it working for myself.. Where you have:

74.201.102.13 gls.ddo.com

74.201.102.13 gls-auth.ddo.com

Underneath it put in this as well:

74.201.102.13 gls-lm.ddo.com

74.201.102.13 gls-auth-lm.ddo.com

I had to put those in as well to get my DDO working for Lam. Hope this helps others. -- Skyechang

Does anyone know the ip address for my.ddo.com? That is the only part that hasn't been updated after I followed the above directions. -- Jules

I have not been able to find this file that I'm supposed to modify, and I have cleared out my internet browser cache/history. Still getting the other 'Ddo.com' domain page. Running Win7, if that makes a difference.--Ardkor (ContributionsMessage)

@Ardkor: Same here in Germany, showing a host-renewal and deletion site. Might be a bigger issue than expected to get it fixed. Anyone knows, if the recommended editng of the hostfile will work for server Wayfinder also??--Kenni (ContributionsMessage)

To find the file in question, go to:
Computer->C:(or whatever your main hard drive is called)->Windows->System32->drivers->etc
Once there, right-click on the hosts file and select "Properties". In properties, select the "Security" tab and select "Edit". Change the permissions for Users to "Full Control". Close the properties screen. Open the hosts file in Notepad and add the above mentioned lines at the end. Once edited, save it and it should be fine. You may still need to wait a few moments and/or close and clear your browser cache.

Workaround for Lama?: This workaround only seems to help for the regular client not the Lamania one

[edit] And a quick update too?

I'm still having to use a changed hosts file. However, there was just an update. It didn't help me. Anyone know what's going on?

[edit] my simple solution

sorry for my bad english:

what i did:

go to control panel, web center => click on your connection, TCP/IPv4 properties and use 8.8.8.8 as your primary DNS 8.8.4.4 as your Secondary DNS numbers. This moves you to Google DNS and you can leave that solution in place permanently.

Detailed instructions are here:https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

While that will work, changing your TCP/IPv4 settings "may" cause serious issues that non-tech type people may need to get someone to fix it for them... Doing this "may" also cause other internet connected things to quit working on your computer. Please use the instructions at the top of the page which are easy to revert if you have an issue, or wait for one more day to play (I'm sure the 30% XP weekend will be extended since they screwed up). -- ShoeMaker ( Contributions Message) 10:37, June 17, 2012 (EDT)

[edit] Another simple solution

Pretty much the same as above only use Open DNS. The instructions are here: https://store.opendns.com/setup/computer/

Please note that of the 3 solutions (host file, Open DNS, Google DNS) different people have had success with different options. If one doesn't work, try another.

Also note that you need to be on a Windows Administrator account for any of these solutions.

One additional step that may help:

Start/Run/cmd.exe ipconfig /flushdns

This clears out data out of your computer which may be stopping your computer from using the new settings you entered

While that will work, changing these settings "may" cause serious issues that non-tech type people may need to get someone to fix it for them... I disagree. The two simple solutions above will not stop anyone from using other internet resources. It is also easy to revert, and is no more a technical solution than yours. In fact, you are asking them to show the files in a temporary directory that by default isn't shown to them because they can make a mess there.

Everything seems to be up at my end, but I'm using a public DNS server (4.2.2.2/4.2.2.1, similar to the google one's mentioned earlier.) - I would suggest placing these IP addresses as DNS servers under your network adapter settings rather than your hosts file, as the hosts file will not rename your DNS nameservers. The hosts file will only allow you to specify specific IP addresses for certain hosts, doing the above will speedup your resolution by a couple milliseconds, but should the IP addresses ever change in the future, you'll have to modify or remove theses entries from your hosts file.
