Template talk:Dmg1

ShoeMaker (Technical_13) Has Been Confused[edit]

Isn't the whole purpose of a template to make it so the end users have to remember LESS, when you start assigning all the different damage types a number, and there are hundreds of them, I feel that defeats the purpose... Perhaps a better solution would be for the user to type the name of the damage type instead of a code or number or what have you... Like {{Dmg|Acid Burst}} OR {{Dmg|Coruscating}} OR {{Dmg|Whatever}} Then the template could do the work of finding out if it is a burst, blast, or absolute, greater or something else... There are many String Functions as well as our regular Parser Functions that we can use for the template to determine if a certain word is in the template or whatever.

The template counts 110+ subtypes of damage and with that many of them nobody would remember the exact code for all, regardless of the template used. The old template can handle touch, normal, blast and burst types but, if it can be easy to remember the code for those, when you run into damage types that dont follow any kind of damage pattern or even naming pattern (acid arrow, antipodal, cloudburst, shocking blow, righteous, godly wrath, slicing winds, peals of thunder etc) then the old template can't help you. The template Habreno is working on is too convoluted, he is juggling with 3 variables instead of 2 so the user has to remember much more stuff.

This template is more basic and undiscriminative, it allocates a number to each type of damage and that's it. Elemental burst? Here's your number. Damage over time? I have a number for you too. Weapon proc that triggers only when there are no less and no more than 4 monsters around you and you have a halfling sorc/wiz in the party? You're no different than the rest so take a number.

The downside to it is that you have to open the template page when you want to use it but once you do that finding the code you want is a matter of seconds. No more trying to create your own code after looking at a handful of examples, no more working with 3 variables trying to find the right combination for what you need. by Mjoll (ContributionsMessage) 11:38, August 23, 2012 (EDT)
