Auto-categorization of Category:Item description templates[edit]

Good day there Joe. I noticed that you were working on building auto-categorization for a couple of our item description templates. While I do not mind you assisting with this project, I ask that you take some time to familiarize yourself with the project I have been working on to do just that. Please see the Category:Item description templates page to see a table of the templates I have completed, and the ones needing work. Please format any that you modify using the same wiki structure as ones that I have done (use history pages to see what things I have been changing), and then mark them as started in the table (change X to and if you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them.

#vardefine:[edit]

The first draft of your Template:Sandbox/joenutsSpellLore has too many unneeded variables... If the variable you are defining is only used once in the output text, you didn't need to define it and are causing more work for the wiki core than is needed UNLESS there are multiple tiers of redundant #switch: #if: #ifeq: #ifexpr: going on like I have done on things like Template:Dec2Vord (which is not fully functioning as of yet).
For example:

{{#vardefine:element_dereference|{{#switch:{{lc:{}}}
|arcane = Universal
|kinetic = Force
|laceration = Slashing
|lightning = Electricity
|radiance = Light and Aligned
|repair = Repair and Rust
|void = Negative
|<span style="color: #FF0000;">Unspecified</span>}}}}{{#vardefine:magnitude_dereference|{{#switch:{}
|1 = Minor
|2 = Lesser
|3 =
|4 = Greater
|5 = Major
|6 = Superior
|<span style="color: #FF0000;">Unspecified [1..6] [Minor..Superior]</span>}}}} Lore

↑ Puts the parser through a LOT more work than typing out ↓

{} {} Lore

twice... Or for that matter, it's even more work on the parser than ↓

{{ucfirst:{{lc:{}}}}} {{ucfirst:{{lc:{}}}}} Lore

Let's see if we can get you to break that habit first, then we'll work on a few other quirks. Big Grin

Noted. I'm mainly using variable declarations as a means to reduce duplication. Didnt realize they were so process heavy, they can certainly be reverted when guts transitioned to core template. For the time being, it's easier for me to see whats going on with them in place though, and long term I'd suggest peeling out logic of that nature so that it can be edited more easily. Category:Item description templates table[edit]

I think it is great you are helping me with this project. I certainly need some help. You and I are the ONLY two people on this wiki that seem to enjoy creating/working on templates. I noticed you removed some of the deprecated templates from Category:Item description templates, but they are still in the table... What I am thinking is: All of the deprecated templates should still be in the table, but they should be commented out so they can only be seen by editing. That way, if for some reason the consensus was to go backwards on templates we could just uncomment them. Do you think, when you have a free moment, you could go through and comment all of the ones you removed from the category out of the table? Thank you. Cool Face

Diagnostics[edit]

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to accomplish, but I hope these can give you a hand. Sort them in various ways, I think you'll find them useful. Feel free to modify them or suggest other ones. Aldyron (ContributionsMessage) 21:39, September 11, 2013 (EDT)

Talked a few months ago about overhauling existing category structure see DDO wiki talk:Category policy, the -items- root category was very cluttered, a lot of duplication, not very organized. I'm now working on cleaning it up.
Basically, DDO Library.Items is going to be as close as possible a clone of AH structure. Item pages should only exist in one easily organized (sub)category in that branch. DDO Library.Item groups will contain items that have been grouped together that have common properties.
Once item category structure is straightened out / made more consistent, the item templates can be fine tuned to place items in appropriate categories.
Also, post template is likely going to get phased out in favor of a much more common wiki format of just indenting lines.

Yes, I did read those threads some time ago. I didn't realize you were the same Joe.

I've separated the queries, each on its own page. You'll find a list here: User:Aldyron#Diagnostics.

Common wiki format will be fine with me. :-) Aldyron (ContributionsMessage) 06:30, September 12, 2013 (EDT)

Is this an item?[edit]

According to your revised category structure, is Belt an item? That is, should it be moved into the Item namespace? Aldyron (ContributionsMessage) 16:06, October 10, 2013 (EDT)

How about Kargon's Tasty Ham? And Potions (individually)? Aldyron (ContributionsMessage) 17:33, October 10, 2013 (EDT)
Template:Named_Jewelry is injecting categories without checking for item namespace, so your page is getting put in to 'Finger Items'

I dont have required security clearance to edit that template, so I figure it's time for me to take a break. Give me a heads up and Ill Change protection on the items templates for 1 day/ week, and the ones which to unlock. → Bladedge (ContributionsMessage) 18:27, December 24, 2013 (EST)

Template:Named_Jewelry Should be unlock till Jan 1st let me know if it didnt. Bladedge (ContributionsMessage) 22:22, December 24, 2013 (EST)
Seems having dual protections didnt work as I thought it would, one always superseded the other. Next time Ill just turn off/on manually. Made the change. Most of the templates didnt have protections up and it resulted in people editing the wrong page Bladedge (ContributionsMessage) 15:01, December 25, 2013 (EST)
