Template talk:Spell list

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Idea: new DPL Template:Spell list[edit]

Why: replace existing poorly-maintained pages like Druid spells or Admixture spells.

Visual: get rid of the colors, plain old "wikitable sortable" ftw (that's just my preference). Maybe "wikitable sortable mw-datatable" for wider tables.

Input parameters:

  • It should be possible to specify multiple categories as input (Druid spells + Healing spells = display all druid healing spells)
  • It should be possible to toggle spell level (not necessary on Druid spells, useful on Admixture spells.

Core columns: Icon, Name, School, Description

  • School includes types in parentheses: Conjuration (Healing, Admixture)

Get rid of columns: Components, Metamagics (not useful IMHO, poorly maintained, unreliable data)

Optional column: Spell level. This is actually tricky. Ideally, the table would have columns for all classes/archetypes that have access to the spell

Name Alc Art DHu
Curative Admixture: CLW 1 1 1

Alternatively, just go with

Name Level
Curative Admixture: CLW Alchemist 1, Artificer 1, Dark Hunter 1

Is this a good idea? Is it possible? Any volunteers? Is it a problem that right now we have two templates for spells (Spelldescription / Infobox-spell)?

  • I started doing a little here. Yes, it's a problem that we have three templates {{Spelldescription}}, {{SLA}}, and {{Infobox-spell}} that all could be doing the same thing. We also do not have categorization in place for spells by level - so there's no current way to have it pull only the "alc 2" spells for example. I haven't started introducing more filters like school or spell type yet, but it's possible. Looking at Template:Spell list/testcases also shows that it'll be an issue pulling the descriptions because many spells will need to be redone to remove scrolls/potions etc from the description area to make it work and look nice.  👟 ShoeMaker ( Talk • Contribs • Patrol • Moves • B • D • I • PP • UM • UR ) 👟 09:26, March 8, 2023 (EST)
As mentioned on our Discord chat server, I think for this to work we'll have to first finish merging those three templates (discussion: Template_talk:Infobox-spell#Ready_to_merge), then modify the final template to revise our category structure for spells to include spell level and any other things we may want to filter by.  👟 ShoeMaker ( Talk • Contribs • Patrol • Moves • B • D • I • PP • UM • UR ) 👟 09:39, March 8, 2023 (EST)
  • If everyone is happy I'll start migrating T:spellDescription to T:infobox-spell today, got ze time. There's a bunch of information that is included inside the description field that we probably don't want when displaying in a #dpl table. Going to add a 'notes' section like in T:Named item and move it there, displayed underneath the description section. Could also make a 'vendor' section (for scrolls, wands and potions), but could just be placed in 'notes' section for now. I think Major bugs or behaviours should still be briefly listed in the description field & not in notes, but any extra information like screenshots, effects on players vs monsters, 'clickies' with the spell etc. should.
