Navigation[edit]

Please see my question at Category talk:Skills#Navigation before adding more navigation bars. Dedridd 10:31, March 8, 2006 (EST)

I moved your reply to the Skills talk page (see link above) to keep the thread together. See there for my reply. Also, please prefix with one or more colons to indent your discussion replies, and sign them with four tildes, like ~~~~, which automatically makes a sig like this --> Dedridd 11:10, March 8, 2006 (EST)

Category benefits[edit]

Hey, Pepcfreak, I just noticed the hard work you did on the Dungeon page, and wanted to let you know that can be done automatically just by making a new category for the Dungeon and marking each of those pages to be in that category. Then when you go to the category page, everything belonging to it is automatically listed in alphabetical order - and, anytime anything new is added to the category, it gets added to the category page as well, automatically. Tihocan and I were chatting about this very benefit on the Talk:City page. Let us know what you think over there. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have about categories, if you have any. Dedridd 15:59, March 8, 2006 (EST)

Thanks if you could point me into the direction to help me learn it on my own "Only way i learn hands on" i will most certianly use your method as i have seen it used other areas just didnt know how to implament it. Pepcfreak 16:04, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Peerless will cringe at this, but here's a link I was provided with when I first started doing edits here - [Category help]. Some of the features listed in the help docs there won't work here, but the vast majority of it will. The short version of what you'll see there about categories is that a category page is just a page in the Category namespace, so you add a Category: at the front of the link, like [[Category:Something]]. Now the page you put that 'tag' on will show up on the Category:Something page. Note that when you want to link to the category page, you prepend the whole thing with a colon, like [[:Category:Something]]. You'll know that you forgot the colon because you'll see the category link appear at the bottom of the page, designating that the page is now part of the category. Also please note that category pages are always plural (see the Naming policy). Dedridd 16:21, March 8, 2006 (EST)
*Cringes* I am trying to SEPERATE us from wikimedia, thanks... lol - also, not ALWAYS plural, again there are some things that arent. If you can read the naming policy and get an idea of what we are trying to do with the page names, then you'll find that 99% of the time the correct page name is common sense! (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.)
Find a nice document detailing the wiki syntax and capabilities other than wikimedia, and I'll happily remove that one from my bookmarks. ;) Google searches didn't turn up any better than this for me, though. Dedridd 16:45, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Ok i created a Category Dungeons. Now im lost on how to make that catagory appear on the "places>Dungeons" page.
You mean redirect Dungeons to Category:Dungeons? (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.)
Note that when you put the [[:Category:Dungeons]] link on the Places page, it'll be designated as not existing, which might make you think you spelled it wrong or your syntax is wrong. Click on the link, and you should see your items listed out underneath the edit box. Put a short description on the page and save it to get rid of that 'doesn't exist' designation. Dedridd 16:54, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Try looking at that page before you speak... (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.)
Thanks, I did. It didn't look like it was working when I hit it. Dedridd 16:58, March 8, 2006 (EST)
GRRR, it doesnt want to alpha without my help. Pepcfreak 17:00, March 8, 2006 (EST)
You just need to add the category tag to each of the Dungeon pages you have listed on the page. I'll hit the first one on the list, so you can see how it should show up (the automatic list will be at the bottom). Dedridd 17:05, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Pepcfreak, don't have time to explain, need to go, but you obviously missed what categories were meant for, you'd better stop wasting time writing down by hand all these lists, they can all be automatically generated. Tihocan 17:01, March 8, 2006 (EST)
I got it!!! yaya! ctrl+v FTW! Pepcfreak 17:35, March 8, 2006 (EST)
Great! :D Tihocan 10:30, March 9, 2006 (EST)
