Please don't use the wiki to advertise[edit]

I would assume this is Veltkreeg from the DDO Forums? Sadly I don't have an account there and thus cannot send you a message directly - if you could register an account here on the wiki (the link is in the upper-right hand corner) it would make my job easier, and make it easier for me to talk to you ^^/

Specifically, my problem is that I don't like people simply using Wiki pages to point to other resources, especially forum threads. People visiting a page such as your (late) [Paladin builds] page can perhaps find their information - but that takes them away from the wiki to do so, with two consequences: they can't browse around and learn anything else, and they won't be able to edit the information they find to improve it for future visitors.

All I ask is that in the future, instead of linking to information, please copy it over here (attaining proper permissions from the author of course, but in this case that was you). Leaving a link as a reference is fine, but the data itself needs to be in the wiki so others can edit and improve on it. Thanks for understanding! I'd prefer to maintain the 1 copy of my build on DDO.com. If I put it over here then there is two copies and I have to keep them synced. --Velt
Yes, that's a drawback of having the same thing in multiple places. If you ask me, a Wiki is a better place as the information you put there usually stays longer available to everyone than on the DDO forums (where all posts eventually sink). Peerless (Elliott) has good reasons for restricting direct links to information that could be just put directly on the Wiki, that he indicated above. I understand it would be more convenient for you to have your build in a single place, but not for everyone else. By the way, if you ever want to put your build on the WIki, the correct place to add it would be on the Starting a Paladin page. Tihocan 12:08, August 10, 2006 (EDT)
I hear what you're saying, but my plan is to make a central build repository. That would include linking to builds on ddo.com, tentonhammer, etc. -V
I see. However, this Wiki's Elliott's webspace, he pays for it, and he has the right to ask for people to avoid putting external links as much as possible (this makes sense especially on a Wiki where everyone can add data anyway). As a side note, a compilation of builds could very well be done on the Wiki, and better than on the DDO forums, since everyone could easily contribute to it. I don't have much to add on this issue, if you really want to convince Elliott, ask him on his talk page. Tihocan 12:59, August 10, 2006 (EDT)
Ive thought about it, and although the general rule is no external links unless it is an ATTRIBUTION of content ON THE WIKI, or a link to an original source - not to have them; I would be OK with one page dedicated to a repository of links that need to be syncd with the wiki - then people could periodically check the original source and make sure the wiki page is up to date. If you start such a page, Im sure tihocan/robin/kakarismaelstrom/other users/etc will be happy to keep such pages updated. I would create it at a page like sync list, and have a list with the wiki page first, then the external link to sync it from; also perhaps a last-syncd date. Leave a note to remind people they can use

to automatically insert a timestamp. Feel free to leave any more questions or discussions of this idea on talk:sync list. Thanks for your help in resolving this issue instead of leaving it at an impasse that helped nobody! A suggestion for you, Veltkreeg - if you would put a link to the wiki page for your build, then a disclaimer that you don't keep it updated; other users could come and contribute to the build right there instead of posting endless suggestions in the thread on the forums, cluttering it up and such. Up to you, you don't have to (obviously). Again at Tihocan - any other ideas about that page, leave it on the relevant talk page. Thanks both of ya (-: Elliott Cable - ?+¿ - ‹·› 19:26, August 17, 2006 (EDT)
This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user and feel that irrelevant comments have been directed at you, please create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. If you're concerned with privacy, registering also hides your IP address.
