Alphanumeric Symbols and Unicode[edit]

Part of the reason Roman numerals are lacking for in-game 'text descriptions'. Is simply because the font SSG uses probably cannot support mathematical or extended symbols. The same situation likely occurs with the programming IDE they use, it's likely very limited and cannot recognise symbols. It possibly cannot even render basic Em rules (U+2014) or En rules (U+2013) by the looks of things. That would explain the inadequate hyphen-minus (U+002D) usage.

PurpleSerpent, personally I didn't notice a great deal of difference between the renderings of: Latin letters IV (U+0049 and U+0056) compared to Roman Numeral Four Ⅳ (U+2163). In either case they might look different as could: ⅠⅤ (U+02160 and U+02164) compared to "Ⅳ" because they are not the exact same. I am presuming you aren't using some unconventional overriding of the font in your User Agent?

Really Roman numerals should be marked up correctly, using techniques such as MathML.

The page: Memory Lapse, clearly implies there are Roman numerals in the quest etched into stone slabs. Rather than the substitute roman type letters loosely looking like Roman numerals. Those in-game graphics floor tiles either are (or are meant to be simulating) Roman Numerals, or they aren't.

In 2018, I didn't write: "Crushing Details can be found behind a secret door in aisle IV of the north wing."

However, if they aren't supposed to be mimicking Roman in-game, then quite simply, the Arabic numeral 4 or the word "four" should be used on the page. Rather than the two letters: "IV" to prevent any confusion.

In fact I believe the game dialogue refers to the labelled bookcase locations as being on "rows" and uses English written words, e.g. "[...] found in row [two] ...". Therefore, I am proposing the word "four" should be used in place for this quest rather than the two confusing letters "IV". :-)

  • Perhaps we are using different site skins, because I'm on the default setting for my current skin and all three of those options look completely different. Anyway, I believe that the wiki generally uses the standard Latin letters for these things (partially because those characters wouldn't work in a page title.) In this case, since the quest uses both "IV" and "Row Four" to refer to the location in question, I'd say there's grounds to change the location to "Row Four" if you'd prefer. • The Wiki scheme I am probably on is [Vector (default)]. Obviously I wasn't talking about code [Edit] view because of course that usually defaults to a (monospace), e.g. 'Courier New' typeface, which will differ.
Roman Numeral Four Ⅳ (U+2163) would typically be displaying as a Unicode compatible Arial (a sans-serif typeface) in the (public facing) page itself. Of course it could be slightly narrower in most cases. Perhaps Roman Numeral 8: Ⅷ (U+2167) or even ⅤⅠⅠⅠ (U+02164 and U+02164,U+02164,U+02164) might be slightly less legible (narrow looking). Obviously I didn't add the single 3, Ⅲ (U+2162) after the 5. Yes, without the correct font when you add several Roman Numeral One... It might not look similar to the completely fake Latin uppercase letters: V,I,I,I as "VIII". The only reason either "IV" or "Ⅳ" would appear is as a loose pictorial only "matching guide" (like say: 💩) for someone whom was completely clueless about any Roman Numerals. Or couldn't understand the linked Wikipedia supplementary on the page. I'm not sure how rare that would be - not having come across Roman - for the DDO target audience, that makes the effort to read the DDO Wiki?
In other words, yes adding say "Row Four" in words would make complete sense. Even if say; Ⅳ, was also added in brackets, for example "Row Four (Ⅳ)" or whatever.

  • I'm not saying it's hard to understand, I'm saying that, at least for my screen display, the numeral appears in a slightly different font/size to the rest of the text, and that annoys me. PurpleSerpent (ContribsMessage) 15:05, November 15, 2022 (EST)
  • I knew you fully understood, I mostly meant alien alphabets. I was fully aware of what you were basically saying it's potentially a font matching issue (or different font stack) if it's looking markedly different, for example line-height or typeface.
Alas the word "four" should be completely safe. ;-)

I don't want to interfer too much in your discussion, but:

  • From my point of view the game engine limits to ASCII character.
  • Only the dash works good with the pages search engine and the template/template functions. Having Unicode characters in data fields (like bonus XP limits) may result in unpredicted results
  • In a sample group of 1000 you are lucky to find one who knows the difference between dash, n-ruler and m-ruler (not to mention the approx. 15 other dash like charaters in Unicode)
  • No one cares about that ;-)
