Tips and Misc
- The Traveler believes that the Archons and Devils would make good guards for the deactivated Codex when you recover it from Vecna. Fortunately, there's one thing the two sides despise more than working with each other: Demons.
- Everything in this quest is a Demon, so pick weapons accordingly. Cold Iron weapons and Good damage are wise choices, Electricity and Poison damage are not.
- To activate the quest, you must first talk to both commanders. After this, both portals activate. The order in which the two fortresses are cleared has no effect.
Archon Fortress
- The optional puzzle challenge, at the fortress's southernmost room, consists of two floating stones puzzles, both of which start in unsolvable states and need to be reset. The puzzles are both determined from the same semi-random list as The Dryad and the Demigod; ergo, if a puzzle's leftmost stone starts off lit, use 44321, otherwise 12342 will always work.
- Head to the west, open the gate and head upstairs. Two little staircases lead to levers that open the gate to the north.
- Bash your way through a parade of demons, including a named Nightmare, and head to the lower levels. Here, after a few more fights, you'll find the boss of this area, a named Flesh Render. Slaying it opens a portal back to the commanders.
- Bug: There is a secret door in the room before the Flesh Render which leads to a volcanic area blocked off with a fiery barrier, leading to an optional red-named Invading Fire Reaver Lord. However, this barrier cannot be raised from outside (although it can be bypassed – see below.)
- To bypass the barrier, bring an Invading Hezrou from a nearby chamber over to the barrier and tank it. After a few Teleport cycles, the Hezrou will teleport behind the barrier and get stuck behind it until its teleport resets. Now, summon a creature that can Teleport itself (the easiest option is probably the Bearded Devil from Summon Monster V) – this will teleport inside the barrier and activate the optional, turning the flame barrier into a portal that you can enter by. As an alternative, it may be possible to press yourself right up against the flame barrier and cast some sort of ray/bolt spell (Sonic Blast seems to work well.) If the attack hits the reaver, it should make its way to the barrier and eventually allow it to become an entrance.
Devil Fortress
- The Devil Fortress is a tad more straightforward than the Archon Fortress.
- To access the optional jumping challenge, which is behind a gem-locked door, you must pull both levers on the nearby tile puzzle. Each lever can only be pulled while powered by the tile puzzle.
- The challenge itself is comparatively easy. To complete it and unlock the chest, pull the lever. This also activates a pair of Dimension Doors between the start and end.
- In the next section, in the southernmost room, there is a secret door at the top of the staircase. This leads to a locked chest.
- Finally, head west and fight a named Ice Flenser, then a named Marilith. The named Bebilith is behind a secret door at the base of the two staircases.
Demon Stronghold
- A portal to the Demon Stronghold opens in the end chamber of both Fortresses, and the room you started in, when both fortresses are cleared.
- After a couple of fights and pulling two levers, you can confront the Invading Glabrezu General, one of Vecna's lieutenants.
- Once this is done, return through the portal and speak to either commander to finish the quest.
