Smiting

Smiting

Type: Suffix
Base price modifier: +5
Effect: Smiting is a powerful weapon enchantment that may cause the death of a construct on a Vorpal Strike. Constructs suffer 4d6 additional damage per hit with a 100 bane damage bonus on confirmed vorpal strikes if the construct has 1,000 or more current HP (or is immune to instant death, such as the red-/purple-named bosses such as the Portals in The Shroud), else a vorpal strike will kill it outright.
Over-all, this yields the average of four six-sided die plus a one in twenty chance for 100 damage = (4 * ((1+2+3+4+5+6)/6)) + (100 * (1/20)) = 19 damage on average (not counting instant death). Additionally, smiting weapons have an undocumented +2 enhancement bonus against constructs, much like a Construct Bane weapon DDO Forums.

Improved Smiting

Type: Suffix
Base price modifier: ??
Effect: Improved Smiting is an even more powerful weapon enchantment that may cause the death of a construct on a Vorpal Strike. Constructs suffer 4d6 additional damage per hit with a 150 bane damage bonus on confirmed vorpal strikes if the construct has 1,500 or more current HP (or is immune to instant death, such as red-/purple-named bosses, else a vorpal strike will kill it outright.
Over-all, this yields the average of four six-sided die plus a one in twenty chance for 150 damage = (4 * ((1+2+3+4+5+6)/6)) + (150 * (1/20)) = 21.5 damage on average (not counting instant death). "Improved Smiting" only shows up in the description; the weapons will be "of Smiting", making it somewhat more difficult to find this specific effect.

Additional information

  • Smiting is an effective Shroud Portal beating enhancement
  • Smiting is also very effective for beating down training dummies. After the first time it is destroyed on each new instance of an airship, the dummy remains in a "helpless" state and takes +50% damage (from Smiting, averaging 6d6 extra per hit and 150 (or 225 with Improved) damage on vorpal hits).
  • The Sovereign Rune of Smiting on Dragontouched armor and the runearm The Disciplinator uses the older effect instead: any critical hit on a construct forces the target to make a DC 23 Fortitude save or die. This effect stacks with the new smiting.
