Threats Old and New
The Cult of the Dragon began creating a Dracolich here, years ago, before they were defeated and driven out of the ruins. Now the Red Wizards of Thay have arrived - and they aim to finish what the Cult of the Dragon started.

Tips and Misc
- Droic Orgul's plan to seize control of the Mythal may have failed, but the Red Wizards still have business in the city of Myth Drannor - namely, raiding an abandoned Cult of the Dragon base to raise an enthralled Dracolich. The process of dominating this immensely powerful undead dragon is proving a struggle, however, and this has provided you a window to eliminate both the Dracolich and the Red Wizards before this terrible scheme comes to fruition.
- The lockout for this raid comes right at the start - Phathroi the Guardnorn will seal the entrance to the raid once spoken to for the second time. However, this does mean that Dimension Door can be used safely while in the raid.
- The Red Dracolich Karliath is actually in the first room after entering the raid, but there's little point engaging her now, as she is invincible while her Phylactery survives. However, while unengaged Karliath causes a stacking Fire DoT to build up on all party members in the raid, so leaving a tank behind might be advisable.
- At this point the fight is fairly simple - Karliath has a couple of special moves that will become relevant when the whole party faces her later, but right now all the tank will need is a decent score in Fire Absorption. Remember to keep half an eye on the two orange-named Fire Elementals that will eventually spawn - while these are active high-damage Fire AoE circles spawn in the room.
- Tip: Knockdown Immunity and blocking the dragon's attacks help to avoid being knocked down in the fire circles.
- The rest of the party should head North into the corridor. There are three directions here - directly North leads to a shrine room, East leads to an optional (this should ideally be done after the main raid, as it is not time-limited and leaving it till later will lift some pressure off the tank), while heading West and then North leads to the next major fight. (There are also three Red Wizards here with paired Elite Thayian Bone Guards - as in the main quests, the Bone Guards must be dead for any major damage to be done to the Wizards, but the Wizards will in turn raise their own Bone Guard after about 20 seconds.)
- Note that as the Elite Guards are only orange-named, they are subject to Crowd Control effects. They can also be slowed considerably by pulling them into a Dead Magic Zone, and if killed there cannot be raised again - try to do this whenever possible.
- The next room contains Commander Ophael, a purple-named Marilith. Ophael's fight is initially fairly simple - she summons four smaller minions and charges, while generating spinning blades moving around the room in a fixed pattern, similar to Queen Lailat. (Trying to tank Ophael in melee is risky, as she has a stacking Poison DoT on her blades and your best tank is probably already locked down in Karliath's room, but note that while not engaged in melee range she builds up stacks of A Cunning Plan, which dramatically increases the damage of her next few melee attacks should she manage to close ranks again.)
- The Poison DoT on Commander Ophael's attacks is Supernatural, and can therefore affect Warforged and Paladins and bypass the lingering immunity effect from Neutralize Poison. Players in Undead forms or with specific immunity to Poison effects from items are still immune, and casting Neutralize Poison on an affected player will still cure all stacks of this effect.
- It is after Commander Ophael is banished back to the Abyss that the twist in this fight becomes evident - just fifteen seconds after her demise, she and her minions hop into a portal and come straight back again! Again, there is little point remaining in this room just yet - instead, a few characters need to head to the side doors and use the gaps that appear in the barriers to enter the surrounding ring of rooms.
- Two cracks appear in each side barrier for 30 seconds each time Ophael dies, each of which can only be used once. Dimension Doors back through also open whenever Ophael is killed, but otherwise it's impossible to leave this area until the next objective is completed - make sure that both the players that head through and those that remain to fight Ophael again are self-sufficient enough to survive the upcoming fights without support from the other team. (The fight will get easier as Portal Keepers are killed and trash-spawning portals close.)
- Once outside the Mess Hall, your next step is to head round the ring of corridors surrounding the Ritual Room and kill three red-named Grey Slaadi and their pet Jariliths. Once this is done, everyone in the ring can head back to Commander Ophael's room and defeat her for good.
- The next step is to head North into the Ritual Room and eliminate Grand Ritualist Kathul Sep and her three Red Wizard allies. Kathul also has a paired Elite Thayian Bone Guard which will need to be repeatedly eliminated or destroyed in a Dead Magic Zone.
- Kathul Sep periodically explodes when attacked, dealing Evil damage to nearby players. This is fairly ineffectual on Normal and Hard but can become a massive problem on Elite, so try and keep your distance.
- With Kathul Sep dead (you can leave the Ritual Room after she dies without worrying about the other Red Wizards following you), your next target is Karliath's Phylactery. A Dracolich's Phylactery is incredibly difficult to destroy, but handily one of the Grand Ritualist's research notes gives you a clue about how to do it - concentrated Dragonfire.
- One character needs to interact with the Phylactery on the plinth, which gives them two buffs - one which renders them completely immune to fire damage, and another which indicates they are holding the Phylactery (this will also cause a miniature copy of the Phylactery to appear above their head.) To destroy the Phylactery, that character must then head back to Karliath's room, stand in one of the Dead Magic Zones there to remove the fire immunity buff, and then get hit by the Dragon's breath attack (note that this does not work when blocking). If the character holding the Phylactery dies or recalls, it returns to its plinth in the Ritual Room.
- Once Karliath's phylactery is destroyed, it becomes possible to deal lasting harm to the Dragon. At this point, all characters should head back to her room and begin attacking her.
- Karliath's attacks are mostly similar to the standard Red Dragon set, but she does have a couple of unique tricks. Heat Wave, the stacking DoT effect, shouldn't be a problem while she's in combat, but make sure to keep an eye above your head and the heads of pets, summons and other players for the text that indicates that player/summon/monster has been hit with Spreading Flames of the Dracolich. This ability will cause them to explode in a few seconds, dealing heavy fire damage to anyone nearby and spreading the effect to them. This effect stacks, so remember to keep your distance to avoid massive damage spreading throughout the whole area.
- Karliath will also begin summoning a wider variety of trash mobs with her Phylactery destroyed - this includes exploding fire bats (step away from one if the word *SPARK* appears above its head), Arcane Oozes and Magma Brutes. Once she reaches half health, a Red Wizard with a paired Bone Guard will also begin attacking. It is important to try and keep trash numbers down here, as if multiple types of enemy are active at once Dungeon Alert may start triggering - the bats are effectively self-disposing, but Crowd Control and instakills may be very useful on the Elementals and Oozes.
- Other than the bats, each of Karliath's minions has a special fire-related effect:
- The Fire Elementals' attacks cause stacking Fire vulnerability (max 20 stacks), lower your reflex saves (-2 per stack), and Fire AoE circles spawn near their targets.
- Arcane Oozes passively deal fire damage to nearby targets.
- Magma Brutes passively apply a stacking Fire DoT to anyone not nearby.
- Once Karliath is destroyed, the end chest appears in her room and a door East opens to another room containing the Ritual Table, used for upgrading certain Myth Drannor items. (This note also contains notes indicating the Cult of the Dragon had another base they were using to create a Dracolich from the skeleton of a Green Dragon; this appears to be a reference to the item Eon, the Poisoned Reign.)
- Optionals:
- The Eastern route in the Red Wizard area above leads to the Battlerager Brigade, a fight against twelve orange-named Battleragers spawning in three waves of increasing size. With the Battleragers dead, you can then head into a heavily trapped room containing six runes, each requiring a score of 80 or more in one of the six ability scores. There are two sets of three runes - activating all three runes in a set opens the door to a Simon Says puzzle and a pile of gold coins, and completing both Simon Says puzzles opens the door to a chest (this requires the party contain at least one character with an 80 in all six ability scores.) This also completes the Dwarven Treasury optional, which unlocks a bonus end chest after completion of the raid
- Note that this optional can be completed after the raid proper is finished (which is much easier considering the absence of Karliath's special attacks).
- There are four notes - one in the Ritual Room and one with each of the three Portal Keepers.
