Template talk:Maintenance category

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

What exactly is a maintenance category? Currently almost every page in DDOWiki is under the Category:DDOwiki maintenance categories in one way or another. My user page is under it, the quest pages are under it, the template pages are under it, the item pages are under it and so on and so on. It's such a rare occasion to find a page that is not under this category.

So, looking at wikipedia: This category is for Wikipedia pages and categories that list other pages that need maintenance (cleanup, expansion, etc.)

This definitely does not apply to most of the pages and subcategories that exist in Category:DDOwiki maintenance categories. Now I assume everyone knows what I'm talking about, but if you can't see where this template has been used wrongfully, I will be happy to provide as many examples as requested. So, if someone says "Faltout, can you provide 2 examples?", then I'll respond with:

Related to that is the fact that many categories have content that may need tracking or maintenance. For example, Category:Users has a nice table and all, but this content places it under Category:Pages using NiceCategoryList, which is a tracking category (probably). If you want to add content to a category, it should be done in a way that will not place that category under another irrelevant category. • Templates  and Extensions  do not hold content about DDO and are therefor DDOwiki maintenance categories . The simple definition for what a Maint Cat is on DDOwiki is that it's a category intended to track or maintain things that are not DDO content.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 16:19, March 14, 2018 (EDT)
    • So it doesn't have the same meaning as it does on Wikipedia. Where is the record of the poll about the change of its definition? I'd like to reopen it. As I said, every page is currently under maintenance categories so even your simple definition doesn't hold up. And no definition is going to project the current state of maintenance categories as they are completely useless. Some of the subcategories can still be helpful if they weren't related to test pages, outdated pages and whatnot. But the actual maintenance categories is useless. • What makes you think that every category is in there? I'm looking at the category itself, and I don't see very much content related categories there. In fact, I only see 398 out of 6,282 (6%) categories in there. What makes you think it's out of control?  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 20:49, March 14, 2018 (EDT)
        • Because I look at random pages and see them in maintenance categories for no reason at all. Just now: +1 Starter Quarterstaff. It is under maintenance with no apparent cause. Looking into it deeper (which takes a lot of time and patience), it seems it belongs in Category:The Voyage reward items. The category has {{verify}} in its description. This puts it under Category:Statements requiring verification, which is under Category:DDOwiki maintenance categories. So, this places +1 Starter Quarterstaff under maintenance. Where is the error in that chain? That Category:The Voyage reward items has content that may be subject to maintenance. Which is part of my post above (Categories need to be stripped of content that may be subject to maintenance).
Before making this edit, I was also looking at why any random piercing weapon was under maintenance. Turns out, the DPL in Category:Piercing weapons had transcluded Epic Sting enhancements in it and one of those enhancments was using a replaced template. It took a while to figure that out and I believe this will take the whole Category:Piercing weapons out of maintenance.
Those are obviously not cases where this template was used incorrectly. However, I still stand by my opinion that we should follow the Wikipedia definition and leave templates and extensions out of maintenance categories. The pages that contain DDO content are under the category Category:DDO library. Everything NOT in this category is not part of DDO. It doesn't need to be under maintenance instead and actually make maintenance categories useful at last. A place where editors can go and correct issues with the wiki.
