Talk:Starting a Wizard

I disagree with a lot of this, but I suspect that is going to happen with all the starting guides. This is a very well written guide though, so I thought I'd just put my 2 cents on the discussion page.

  • I like con as an attribute- not for the hit points, but for the concentration. When I look at my combat logs, I am always stunned at how many concentration checks I am forced to make. Obviously with a better AC you don't have to make as many, but you will still be making a fair amount. Because of this, dwarves aren't as bad of wizards as you might think.
  • Extend spell is a fantastic metamagic feat if you plan on buffing at all.
  • I discourage taking a -1 on any of your saving throws. If that means you need to take 16 int instead of 18 (it shouldn't) the tradeoff is well worth it.
  • It's probably worth mentioning that the potency I that comes on your newbie staff does not stack with the level 1 damage enhancements.
  • While cheesy, I'd also mention that neutrally-aligned chars (true neutral and neutral good) will find robes of stability (+2 ac and saves) all over when they start.

Yes, I believe there will be lots of dissent on these pages. However, a good rule of thumb is be bold - make changes first, other people can ask their questions later. Of course, that course of action is also debatable, bit it seems to work (-: (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 13:57, February 18, 2006 (PST)
