Talk:Revamping companion pages, and creating trick pages

Forums: Index > Village pump > Revamping companion pages, and creating trick pages

Hi everybody. I was planning on revamping the companion pages, by replacing all the usages of {{Companion Certificate}} by the new template {{Companion}}. My idea is to turn the structure of companion articles in something similar to {{Hireling}} articles. I find this structure more interesting because we would have articles on each creature companion instead of their certificates (analogous to having articles on hirelings instead of their contracts), besides having the same manufactured hotbar, but showing the companion tricks instead of hireling commands. Categorization would be done by race. In the same project, I wish to create dedicated pages for the companion tricks using the new template {{Companion Trick}}. I would like to hear from the other editors if there are any objections to this project, or if I can go ahead with it.

Testcases of companion pages: Storm Horns Owlbear, Snowy Owlbear, Toco Toucan.

Testcases of trick pages: Owlbear Trick - Play Dead, Owlbear Trick - Shake Off, Owlbear Trick - Sit, Owlbear Trick - Stand Up, Toucan Trick - Play Dead, Toucan Trick - Dance, Toucan Trick - Preen and Shake, Toucan Trick - Loop de Loop.

Smells like a lot of work. Not sure if you can get many contributors to work on this agenda. But if you don't mind working on it alone, go ahead :) Feedback:

  • The link in the popup for the tricks is tricky to click. Maybe make also the icon clickable?
  • Do we need so detailed categorization? Is race that important?
  • Imho the most important statistics are binding and source (ddo store, event, mm, etc.).

  • Many thanks for the feedback! I just solved the first point (icons are now clickable). About the other points:
    • Race categorization: I am proposing this because the tricks are in a per-race base. For instance, if you buy an owlbear trick from the DDO store, it will be available for both Storm Horns Owlbear and Snowy Owlbear. In that way, I manage to easily list the compatible companions in each trick page.
    • Bindind and source: I agree. They are already in the template, but mm and event are hidden by default currently (as in {{Companion Certificate}}. I've copied the respective logic, I think event is going under 'notes').
    • Working alone: I have no problem with that (at least at the beginning). I have companions from 12 different races, which I think it may be at least a good start for the tricks since they are in a per-race base. MrLizard (ContribsMessage) 09:46, November 26, 2020 (EST)
  • 47 GIFs uploaded (these are what I can do for the moment, I've recorded all the tricks of my companions race-wise), from a total of (rough estimate) 174 trick pages created. You were right, this is lot of work. Any info on races of the companions still using {{Companion Certificate}} (which are in C:Creature Companion certificates), as well as the companion stable description of many which are missing, and images of the trick icons, are all welcome =). Hello, I've posted a link to the image help section of ddowiki discord. The resource also includes companions and tricks. Cru121 (ContribsMessage) 08:04, December 7, 2020 (EST)

I've added an extra categorization structure, C:Creature companions by source, which goes in the direction of Cru121's comment about source being important. MrLizard (ContribsMessage) 16:08, December 14, 2020 (EST)
