Talk:Ogre Leader

Elemental Evil Part One[edit]

Found a Red-name "Ogre Leader" enemy, that had the same armored look as the Ogre Lackeys and Ogre Commanders, and was CR 10. Definitely NOT the same kind of "Ogre Leader" as the one this page concerns. Probably going to have to add a second "Ogre Leader" entry on the same page, like for other creatures that are same name but different colors and CRs in different quests (Baba Lysaga, Boneshrieker Harrier, Ice Flenser, etc). My preference would be to create distinct entries for monsters with different attributes (especially CRs), even if they get collapsed into a single MM entry. This will allow scripts that automatically collect attributes (such as for adventure monster tables) to work correctly. It should be possible to add a 'variant' or 'disambiguation' tag to the template which would allow scripts to collect up all monsters with the same base name and cross-reference them with each other. That said, pages with two distinct templates on a single page (see Strahd von Zarovich) seem to work correctly with the quest scripts, so I'd be OK with this too. Nom (ContribsMessage) 20:36, September 8, 2020 (EDT)

  • The monster gathering template for the quest pages {{Monsters in quest}}, only selects the monster entries that have a |habitat= parameter with the same name as the quest page. That said, having different wiki pages for the same monster just because it appears differently in quests is not helpful for the reader that is going to search for the monster name. Please use the same page with different entries for monsters with the same name. If this is not something acceptable for an edge case, then at least provide a redirection at the top of the page ({{About}}) Faltout (ContribsMessage) 23:12, September 8, 2020 (EDT)
  • I have gone and updated this page to the standard set by Summoned Fire Elemental and Huge Black Pudding. TheWarforgedArtificer (ContribsMessage) 18:14, October 1, 2021 (EDT)
    • Well, this is a weird one. I've been checking over the game's files, as I thought the red-named ogre in this chain was called Ogre Chieftan. What I got was a bit of a surprise. Ogre Leader was in the files at ToEE's CR levels, but Ogre Chieftan isn't. What I think has happened is this: the red-named ogre in the chain used to be called Ogre Leader, but for some reason, the devs decided to change it later. Rather than renaming the monster, for some reason they chose to have it spawn as Ogre Leader and immediately switch its name to Ogre Chieftain. Only, sometimes, like in Epic Three-Barrel Cove, this doesn't work. This raises an interesting quandary - do we fold this into Ogre Chieftan or treat it as a separate monster? • Actually no. I just encountered Ogre Chieftan in ToEE part 2. Rednamed, matches the appearance that page has. In ToEE part 1, there was a single redname called Ogre Leader, that had the same visual appearance as Chieftan (and I also got screenshots of Leader, so I will be uploading one soon to add into this page). So, -both- of them exist, but Leader is in pt1, Chieftan is in pt2. TheWarforgedArtificer (ContribsMessage) 17:53, October 2, 2021 (EDT)
  • Monsters of the same name belong on the same page with different template invocations.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 00:53, October 5, 2021 (EDT)
  • Ah, right. You say you've got an image already? Usually I'd try and get one myself, but you discovered this one so I'll let you do the honours. PurpleSerpent (ContribsMessage) 04:44, October 5, 2021 (EDT)
