Talk:Named thing templates

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

We currently have multiple "Named" things templates:

As well as remnants of Unique and other templates..

  • Template:Unique Jewelry Had one use, fixed
  • Template:Unique armor new Redirected to Named armor Transferred all items over to Named Armor directly. ← ShoeMaker 17:48, June 1, 2011 (EDT)
  • Template:Unique weapon Had five uses, fixed
  • Template:Unique shield
  • Template:Unique armor sef326 not even used
  • Template:Quiver
  • Template:Eternal wand

Most of these multiple templates use different names to refer to the same things:

  • Base Value
    • cost
    • basevalue
  • Minimum Level
    • ml
    • minlevel
  • Durability
    • dur
    • durability

Well, you get the idea now.. Is there any reason we can't consolidate all of these templates into a single template? This would make all of the arguments universal, and in my opinion, easier to use.

Something like:

{{Named Item
|type =
|proficiency requirement =
|race requirement =
|minimum level =

|maximum dex bonus =

|critical threat range =
|hand =

|damage modifier =
|durability =

The template could do most of the rest of the heavy lifting. We have the parser functions to be able to have the template auto-categorize, auto-adjust table colors, auto-select what fields/rows are needed and ignore the rest. Might take me a couple days to make the template, and then probably take me a few weeks/month to go through and apply it to all of the items, but I think it would be worth it in the long run.. I will start the template today, and when I complete it, I will link it on this page and ask for further opinions.. I may post from time to time in here to ask for development suggestions and ideas if I hit a roadblock..

If I had any idea how to do bot stuff, I could probably fix it in no time, I still have to semi-manual fix spelldescription and Unique armor new linked pages.→ Neouni 04:26, May 26, 2011 (EDT)

I've started Template:Named Item, feel free to look at what is there so far, remembering it is a work in progress.. A detailed revision history is available on Template_talk:Named Item. As far as bots go, I've been researching setting one up to be able to go through and convert all of the items to the new template I am building.. http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bot has some information on the topic with other places to look.. There is a downloadable one called AWB that seems like it could be fairly easy to use and set up.. I'll have to send Xevo another email and let him know about this "named" project and request bot privileges so that I can more easily move all of the individual items to the new template upon completion of Template:Named Item. This project has been back burnered long enough[edit]

So, I've decided to focus some time and energy into getting back to and completing this project... It's probably going to take me a few days to figure out what I have already completed, and probably a few more to make all of the adjustments for things that have changed since I started the project. Then I should be able to go through and add the rest of the "stuffs" to make it work. I'll try to remember to document all of the works as best I can. I've already set up some back-end work so that when this project is complete, it will be used as a default for ALL items and ALL new items will go into Item: by default (Failure to do so will result in a big red (maybe blinking) message explaining how to fix the mistake and get it right). Completing the Item:izing project has breathed renewed life into this project for me, and I intend to get it finished! This project has been sitting around collecting dust for over a year and a half, and the need for it has been slowly increasing... Anyways, enough rambling. If you have read this, and don't see any forward progress by Tuesday, April 23, 2024 then leave me a message on my talk page, leave a message with Kobold_Scribe on our IRC chat channel, IM me on Yahoo!, leave me an email, or hunt me down in-game and poke me. Chances will be good I have something and just haven't gotten around to posting it. Big Grin
