If you try to talk to him while at level 1, he will reply:

• Maxwell Statler: Say, after you get a bit more experience under your belt, maybe you can help me out.

If you are at level 2 or higher, however, he will reply:

• Maxwell Statler: Life's bloody unfair, that's what it is!
• Maxwell Statler: It's just waiting for you to stand up, so it can kick you in the arse and knock you down again.
• Maxwell Statler: Better to just stay down with my barrel of grog.
• You: Sounds like you've had some hard times. Care to talk about it?
• Maxwell Statler: Me and my brother scrimped and saved every copper piece we earned to buy our own saloon.
• Maxwell Statler: And what for? Just so the Sharn Syndicate can come along and take it.
• Maxwell Statler: They're on their way to the Dragontail Saloon right now, and they'll kill us if we haven't left. I've got half a mind to stay and fight.
  • You: You should definitely fight. I'll help you. (Bestow quest)
    • Maxwell Statler: You will? Praise the Host!
  • You: Why haven't you asked the authorities for help?
    • Maxwell Statler: you think I didn't go straight to the Coin Lords and the Stormreach Guard? Had a long chat with them, I did.
    • Maxwell Statler: Turns out they don't care unless you got a big bribe.
    • Maxwell Statler: So now I'm out in the street with nothing but my grog, and the Sharn Syndicate's coming to take my Dragontail Saloon any moment now.
      • You: If you're going in there to stand up to them, then I'll stand by your side. (Bestow quest)
        • Maxwell Statler: You will? Praise the Host!

Talking to him after acquiring the quest, but before completion, will make him say:

• Maxwell Statler: You still going to help me with the Sharn Syndicate?
• Maxwell Statler: Well, if you haven't changed your mind, we should go inside the Dragontail Saloon and wait for them.

On completion of quest, he will congratulate you with the following:

• Maxwell Statler: For a moment I thought we were done for. But I should've known they couldn't hold a candle to a scrapper like you.
• Maxwell Statler: Now that the Syndicate knows better than to bully us, I'll one day open the Dragontail Saloon to all of Stormreach!

After completing the quest and take the reward, if you talk to him again, he will reply:

• Maxwell Statler: Quite a mess those Sharn goons left behind. but don't you worry, I'll get it all cleaned up, right square. And I won't forget the favor you did for me!

Stand Your Ground

Maxwell Statler is wielding a bow, and will not move during the entire quest. He has a CR of  ♣?Solo/Casual ♦?Normal ♥?Hard ♠10Elite, can be buffed and healed, and if he dies, the quest will fail, forcing you to start again.

He will keep commenting about the fight after each wave. The texts seems to be randomly selected from a list, and have no specific order, except for the final one.

• Maxwell Statler: Hah, those guys weren't so tough!
• Maxwell Statler: I don't know what we were scared of. Those guys were pushovers!
• Maxwell Statler: Come on, you gangsters! Give me everything you have!!!
• Maxwell Statler: Khyber, it's Slab, the Syndicate Underlord! Hit that lard with everything you've got!

Once Rance Statler dies, he goes from optimistic to mourning:

• Maxwell Statler: They killed Rance...
• Maxwell Statler: Oh no..., is this saloon worth losing Rance over?
• Maxwell Statler: Rance, no..., why?!?

After you beat out Slab the Crusher, if Rance is still alive, he will thank you for the help:

• Maxwell Statler: Thank you so much! -- Let's head outside and discuss your reward while my brother cleans up here.

After you beat out Slab the Crusher, if Rance is dead, he will tell you about his plans:

• Maxwell Statler: My poor brother dead! -- Maybe I can afford priestly magic for him if I sell this place. (Sigh) I'll meet you outside.
