Help talk:Relation

Umm?

This seems nifty, but I can't imagine a way to put it to use. Have you explained how you envision this helping yet, Peerless? Dedridd 08:53, March 22, 2006 (EST)

Same as Dedridd. This looks cool, but isn't there a risk of it being too complex for the average Wiki editor? Also, is it going to break current links? (I sure hope not). Tihocan 11:37, March 22, 2006 (EST)

LOL It doesn't break links, thank goodness - but it allows for some interesting ideas. Watch: This page is a discussion about (removed, boke something). Simple right? But wait! Look at the bottom of the page! Not only that - once I get the search working, we can search for anything that is a discussion about anything else - we can search for anything about the sidebar, we can search for what Help talk:Relation is a discussion about, we can search for what relations Help talk:Relation has to Help:Relation, all kinds of things. We can search for attributes, etc. Let's see another example: If we are on the page Magic Missile, we can safely say: Magic Missile can be cast by is cast by::Wizards. Look at my code again and voíla - we can search for anything that has the relation 'is cast by' to the object 'Wizard's - that way, live list of every spell a wizard can cast! Kind of like categories on MEGA F***ING STEROIDS. Rightish? (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.)

Ok, yeah, that's a powerful feature. Like most powerful features though, it needs to be controlled or it's going to get out of hand. We have problems just keeping page names standardized. What if Fred comes along and uses the phrase 'is cast by', while Barney uses 'castable by' and Dino uses 'can be cast by'? The usefulness of the feature gets destroyed by nothing being in the same semantic category. It could get ugly fast unless there's some kind of page about how to use it, listing the initial intended uses, and what phrases to use. The other possibility is that without explanation, it'll be too abstract of a concept and it won't get used. More than likely, you're already planning on writing this up... Each relation / attribute already has a page in the Relation: or Attribute: namespace as soon as you create it. Notice the box at the bottom. Then, we can place :Category:Relation or :Category:Attribute on their namespace explanation page and have an automatic full list of the ones currently in use! And sadly, just like categories, we will have to be watching, and making sure the ones noobs add are usable )-: Oh well, get used to it. It's the way of the wiki, and there are far more benefits than detriments to this system, at least in my opinion - I'm open to mad suggestions though, always am - want to make this the best for everybody, and that's all I've been trying to do.
