Wikipedia has an article on the same subject:

Downtime is used to refer to periods when a system is unavailable. SSG staff usually informs about downtime via Service News.

Downtimes in DDO
  • (Almost) each week on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, DDO servers are restarted. Servers are usually back up within an hour. Regular weekly restart might be canceled if there's a game update.
  • Game updates usually take 2-4 hours of downtime. Updates usually also have Release Notes.
  • Data center migrations are (fortunately) rare. These downtimes can last a day or more.
Tips
  • Legacy Guild Airship amenities can be missing for one hour after a restart.
  • In case of longer and/or unplanned downtimes, SSG may compensate players, often by giving out free stuff, prolonging VIP subscription, prolonging limited time events and similar.
