I'm not sure where to request this so I'll request it here. I was wondering if I could get the "checkuser" flag on my account. With all the recent spambot activity, I'd like to check the addresses attacking us and compare them to several databases I use for blocking e-mail spam. Perhaps, I may be able to decypher a pattern where this is coming from, and block it appropriately. Today alone, I think I've fired off about a dozen blocks at unacceptable usernames, and nabbed a couple anonymous spammers that managed to post, and blocked them. Each anon post I get the IP for, I do a whois and DNS search on the IP address and see if it's from an end user or from a script-running VPS/spambot machine. In the later case I can do a subnet block on the node and it will cease the spammer from being able to spam the wiki using that service.

I seem to have gotten a bit wordy in my request.

Just an update, I did block a few subnets. I did do a lot of research (sooo many whois lookups, IP/subnet calculations, and domain profiles), and I'm still putting together a list... I've tested the few that I've blocked so far and all that has come from them is bogus accounts and spam. From what I'm seeing, this is assaulting us from worldwide. Update #3: The torrent of spam seems to have slowed down a bit. I think I blocked most of the servers where it was originating, but more still keep popping up here and there, but in far less frequency.

As this problem may be ongoing, and hope a resolution is found soon, I would like to request formal promotion to the rank of Bureaucrat. I make this request not only to address current issues, but in hopes to be a bigger part of the future of this site, and hope to help this site prosper.
