The DDO numbers project[edit]

Turbine has not released the detailed numerical effects of all spells (well, now they have, but many are wrong). One major goal is to find them out by ourselves. I suggest the following: try to use a spell as many times as you think necessary, each time writing down any numerical effect you can measure (e.g. the damage, the duration, etc.). Then come back to this very same page and copy your numbers here, with any relevant information that would be necessary to interpret them. Once we have enough numbers, we can deduce the exact formulas used by Turbine. For offensive spells, I suggest to stick to the normal difficulty and to standard monsters, in order to make comparisons easier (another solution is to study the effect of the spell when it is cast on you by an opponent). For distances, see the talk page of this topic for a suggestion I made earlier. Among the relevant information related to a spell's effect, don't forget to mention for instance your casting ability, your potential enhancements that may change the results, etc.

Just add below a new subsection for each spell, in alphabetical order. Don't worry if you cannot find out how to interpret the results, all we need is raw data.

A similar project for arcane spells can be found here: Where did "How Your Spells Really Work" go?. The wiki section for the wizard and sorcerer spells is being updated as information becomes available.

Spells in testing[edit]

Acid Splash[edit]

  • Caster: Kobold Shaman CR1 (normal) on 4 HD character
Effect: 1,1,1 Acid damage

  • Cleric L5, Wis 18: +13 HP and bless effect for 5 mins
  • Cleric L6, Wis 18: +14 HPs and bless effect for 6 mins
  • Cleric L7, Wis 18: +15 HPs, bless effect for 7 mins

All L1 cleric spells[edit]

All L2 cleric spells[edit]

All L3 cleric spells[edit]

Bless[edit]

Current belief: +1 luck attack bonus, 1 min/level, need to figure out the save vs. fear bonus

  • Cleric L1, Wis 14: +1 attack bonus, 1 min
  • Most likely a mistake (a L2 cleric should double-check): Cleric L2, Wis 14: +2 attack bonus, 2 min, cooldown 2s
  • Cleric L3, Wis 14: +1 attack bonus, 3 min
  • Cleric L5: +1 luck attack bonus, 5 min

Cause fear[edit]

  • Note: read on the ddo forums that the effect may disminish when cast more than once, but this does not appear to be true
  • You must face your target in order to cast the spell, also attacking the feared target will not dispel the fear effect
  • Caster: Kobold Shaman CR1 (normal) on 4 HD character
Effect on successful will save: Shaken for 5 seconds. Multiple castings reset the duration to 5 sec but don't increase it further
Shaken effect: -2 Attack, -2 on saves, -2 skills
  • Cleric L5, Wis 18
    • on Kobold rogue in Sewer rescue: (very) approximate duration of Fear is (in seconds): 6, save, 6, 9, >0, 49 (with extend spell), >0, 20
    • on Kobold in Sewer rescue: 6, 12, save, save, 18 (extend), 48 (extend), 50 (extend), 12, 24, 12, 14, save, 20, 26, 14, 23, 25, 6, 7, >0, save, 24, 18

Effect: -1 Str on failed fort save
  • Caster: Gertis Apprenctice (Missing Ward) CR1 (hard) on 4 HD character

Effect: 4,5 negative Energy Damage on failed reflex save
Effect: -1 Str on failed fort save
  • Caster: Necromancer Gerti (Missing Ward) CR2 (normal) on 4 HD character
Effect: 6,5,4,5,5,5,4,5,4,5,5,5,6,5 negative Energy Damage on suc. reflex save
Effect: 10,10 negative Energy Damage on failed reflex save
Effect: -1 Str on failed fort save

Command[edit]

  • Cleric L5, Wis 18, on Kobold in Sewer rescue: duration of stun is approximately (in seconds) 5, 6, 6, 5, save, 6, save, 6, 13 (extend spell), 6

Cure light wounds[edit]

Current belief: 1d6 + 2 + min(caster level, 5), needs more experiments as damage spell to assess its efficiency against undead.

  • Cleric L1, Wis 14 on non warforged: 9,7,7,5,8,9,9,6,8,5,7,9,9,6,8,9,7
  • Same with devotion 1: 7,7,6,9,9,6,6,8,6,8,9,9,8,8,6,7,4,4,7,8,9,4,9,6,7,9,9,9,8,9,7,10,7,8,10,10,10,4,8,8,7,9,9,7,4,10,7, 4,6,4,9,9,9,6,6,8,10,10,7,7,4,6,10,9,10,9,8,6,6,9,4,6,6,7,8,7,7,9,4,4,4,10,10,9,7,8,9,7,6,6,10,4,8,4,10,4,4

  • Same on warforged: 6,3,4,4,5,5
  • Did further experiments at L2 and L3 that confirmed the above formula
  • Cleric L5, Wis 18, Improved Devotion II: 16,10,14,15,10,14,13,11,13,16, 11, 14, 11, 16, 14, 16, 13, 13, 10,14,11,16,15,11,10,14,11,11, 10,15

Analysis: seems coherent with expected 10(0.17) 11(0.17) 13(0.17) 14(0.17) 15(0.17) 16(0.16)

  • Cleric L1, Wis 14, damage on skeleton in newbie area: 2,3,6,5

Comments[edit]

Two comments:

  • First note the results of each roll with an enhancement modifier are truncated not rounded so 11.9 heals 11 not 12.
Yes I know about that. This is taken into account in the expected numbers above. Tihocan 10:59, April 5, 2006 (EDT)
  • Second, weapon enhancement adds to the taken enhancement. Thus, CLW with a character with devotion (+20%) and a crossbow with greater devotion (+40%) improves by 60%. The complete equation including enhancements is:

(1d6 + 2 + 1/level) x (1 + taken enhancement + weapon enhancement)

100 rolls with Devotion II plus Greater Devotion I weapon is: 12(0.15) 14(0.15) 16(0.16) 17(0.17) 19(0.17) 20(0.20) 58 rolls with Greater Devotion I plus Greater Devotion I weapon is:14(0.17) 16(0.16) 18(0.16) 19(0.14) 21(0.16) 23(0.19) <Dalfina>

I assume you are level 5? Your numbers are indeed close to the expected value, which (simulated on 100000 rolls), would be respectively 12(0.17) 14(0.17) 16(0.17) 17(0.17) 19(0.17) 20(0.16) and 14(0.17) 16(0.17) 18(0.17) 19(0.17) 21(0.17) 23(0.16). Tihocan 10:59, April 5, 2006 (EDT)
Yes, the above data taken with the Greater Devotion crossbow are from level 5 cleric <Dalfina>
Thanks, then it's coherent. Note that, even if you're not logged in, you can sign your posts with ~~~~ Tihocan 10:41, April 6, 2006 (EDT)
