New columns[edit]

I'd like to add columns for Save (type) and SR (yes/no) to answer questions like "If I have a weak Fort save, what am I vulnerable to?" and "How important is Spell Penetration for me?" Hoopy Froodle (ContribsMessage) 08:58, June 1, 2018 (EDT)

  • I'm not opposed, but I'm not sure it'll be particularly useful for those reasons. Player cast spells and monster cast spells are different, according to the developers. There are a lot of spells also that the monsters have and we don't, nor do we have details on of them. I'm not opposed to do a revamp of the spells pages of the wiki though. We could revamp the template a bit to offer a parameter for whether it's a player cast or monster cast spell and using the same template for both would allow us to create DPL tables with appropriate information, assuming we can do a better job at gathering what each monster can cast and what it's restrictions are.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 10:25, June 1, 2018 (EDT)
Adding those columns also makes the table very wide per this revision. In that diff, I notice that a lot of the SRs and Save information isn't a simple true/false or type. The spell pages should be gone through first and cleaned up for that if that's only what you want to have added. If that was done, we could even convert the way the existing DPL is set up to use a phantom template instead of what is there and do some other fancy stuff with the cell format and what is shown.  👟 ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 👟 10:49, June 1, 2018 (EDT)
(a) Personally, I'm mostly interested in player cast spells. As you say, we may not know pertinent information for monster cast spells. (Honestly, I hadn't considered there might be differences.)
(b) My inclination (ignoring technical feasibility) would be to shorten the descriptions where possible (is that what you mean by "cleaned up"?) and then for any description over N length, 20 <= N <= 40, replace it with "See spell description" or some such.
(c) I've never worked with DPL and am unfamiliar with the concept of a "phantom template", but I trust you know what you're talking about. :)
(d) FYI, I entertained the idea of adding categories ("Spells subject to spell resistance") instead, but thought this approach would be cleaner. Hoopy Froodle (ContribsMessage) 13:19, June 4, 2018 (EDT)
