Village Pump Info[edit]

This is a page for random discussions and c***. Think 'Ranters lounge' and 'General chat' and 'Off-topic' from most popular forums, combined. Will be archived and cleared mercilessly, so keep your conversation active if you want to keep it un-archived.

Template Update?[edit]

I am a wiki novice. But I was thinking it might be a good idea to update the item template to reflect changes where many items have different versions. This would be similar to "Upgradeable?" but instead it would be something like "Tiered?" and in that list it could have options like "Heroic, Epic, Legendary, Perfected" or "Lvl 5, 10, 15, 20, 25" or "Normal, Hard, Elite" or "T1, T2, T3" depending on what the item is like.

Also, is there information somewhere on here or elsewhere on how this wiki code works? Thank you.

  • We're based on the MediaWiki coding format. Some basics are on the page Help:Editing but for anything more specific you'll need to check out the MediaWiki site itself.

As far as tiered items goes, the first case wouldn't really apply because Heroic, Epic and Legendary items aren't typically part of upgrade paths (with a few exceptions) and we only tend to use terminology like that with upgradeable weapons. The other three cases tend to be handled using a template or a single page with an automated list of the tiers of an item. I:Caustic Forum Post provides an example. PurpleSerpent (ContribsMessage)

DDOWiki.com[edit]

What would it take to get a new search engine? The one we have has frustrated me as long as I have used it. One example of its inadequacies: Snapshot of search results --GregJ (ContributionsMessage) 11:09, November 7, 2014 (EST)

  • The reason this is happening is quite some time ago, the new "Item:" namespace was created and there was some debate over it. As a result, there was a script produced (written by me) that truncated the "Item:" from the title of the page. A work around to this would be to create a page in the Main namespace that redirects to the appropriate page in the Item namespace. -- Ague (Talk · Contribs · Blocks · Deletions · Imports · Patrols · Page Moves · Page Protects · User Merges · User Rights) 11:14, November 7, 2014 (EST)
  • Which I've already done in this case. The search engine itself is actually working, as I see the top result for your request is what you searched for... Hrmmm. Maybe I should disable that "## Page doesn't exist" line... I'll look into the ramifications of that... Anyways, I need to go through and do another cleanup pass on these items it seems... *Sigh* I'll take this as encouragement to get my master "Named Item" template completed (which will do some categorizing that will allow me to bot fix these issues). Anyways, as a side note, there has been talk in the past of changing search engine for other reasons, and I'll make sure this usability is factored into whatever decision is made. Wow, awesome! Thanks for the quick work. What I mentioned was just one of the issues I have. The short way to describe what I want is to say "make it like Google search." When I type a word that isn't in any page title except one, I want to be taken to that page. When it is in several page titles, I want to see a "successful" response instead of "not found" message ordered by number of times the word is used in the page contents. Following those entries I would like to see the pages that have the most hits of that word in their contents (but not in their titles). My current dislike of search result behavior also exists in en.wikipedia.org. I can't actually "search" for anything. I can only look something up in an index if it is there. It doesn't actually have to be a high tech engine like Google, either, really. Mediocre 2014 search engine behavior is way beyond the "search" technology currently used by wiki. --GregJ (ContributionsMessage) 15:31, November 7, 2014 (EST)

  • That's too complex for the physical hardware capacity of the wiki. You are welcome to search for pages on wiki from a Google search if you like. Just type in what you want to search and add "site:https://ddowiki.com" and it will search for what you want and only return pages from ddowiki. ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 18:01, November 7, 2014 (EST)

Having had a little time to ponder this (and re-experience search engine imperfections), search algorithm-wise it would not burden the server to match titles successfully in the following circumstances: (1) Misspellings of 1 wrong character per word, (2) Misspellings from having 1 extra or 1 too few letters per word, (3) Incorrecet capitalization, and (4) Missing words. However, I do not know how the search engine or access to search engines are implemented. GregJ (ContributionsMessage) 09:45, November 20, 2014 (EST)

Server status[edit]

Seems like we should have some way of posting when the servers go down and seeing what the current issue is/are.

Currently ddo, turbine, etc are down. Went down around 4 hours ago and hasn't been up since. Currently 4am EST. The servers are responding to ping requests, but no other services, e.g. web site, seem to be operational. People within the game at the time of the crash were kicked out. Doesn't seem to have been any notification anywhere as to what the issue is.

Yea you'd think so. But lately this wiki is nearly as poorly managed as turbines code base. What a huge mess of broken links and other garbage on here lately. This used to be a great source of reliable info with a decent layout, lately its filled with tons of unverified/false info and thousands of broken links.. Whats worse, most of them are newly done. Seems like someones purposely messing up the site and its going unchecked.
Sorry that you feel that way. If you want to, you are welcome to help to improve the wiki. The people working on this are doing the updates in their spare time, and the update 14 changes were massive. If you think something is incorrect, unverified, or worth an update, adding the line {{Update}} <! -- Put reason here --> will be of great help to any editor. Which pages in particular are you referring to? --Krlkch (ContributionsMessage) 05:18, July 26, 2012 (EDT)

Can somebody post this for me?[edit]

I need somebody to make this post on the forums, please. If you do so, leave a reply here too so the rest know not to do it (-: thanks!

Hey all! I'm an administrator on the [url=http://ddo.enterwiki.net/]DDO wiki[/url], and we are thinking about making a new section for people to create a pages for their characters - builds, stats, equipment, any backstory you may have thought up, and so on. I just wanted to guage interest in this before I went ahead and created it - if you would like to have pages for your characters on the wiki, just leave a quick reply here to let me know! Thanks for your time (-:

Also, add a poll to the post with these options: Yes, I would create a page for my character and No, I wouldn't create a page for my character. Thanks, all! (-: [e] · t & c 14:01, December 4, 2006 (EST)

i'll do it now. «robin» talk 17:23, December 4, 2006 (EST)
done! (http://community.codemasters.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148127 poll) «robin» talk 17:27, December 4, 2006 (EST)
Well, guess I was too late ;) Sorry, currently on a trip at a conference... (Tihocan, who forgot to login) 216.123.155.194 19:15, December 4, 2006 (EST)
Well that works too - can somebody duplicate it at the official DDO forums, where I can't post? (You have to have a game account, which I don't). Thanks! [e] · t & c 20:38, December 4, 2006 (EST)
No can do myself as i do not have a US account. Hope someone else can help! «robin» talk 11:51, December 5, 2006 (EST)
Peh dang. lol (-: [e] · t & c 12:10, December 5, 2006 (EST)
I have sent an email to Samera at turbine.com to see if he is willing to post the poll on our behalf. He might do, he might tell me to f*ck off. If anyone else posts on the U.S. forum could you please update this page! «robin» talk 13:11, December 5, 2006 (EST)
What the hell? I can't seem to register on the forums there either... are they restricted to account-holders too? That is soooo gay... it's pissing me off lol. [e] · t & c 16:55, December 5, 2006 (EST)
Yeah the U.S. forum is locked down for posting unless you are a subscriber to the U.S. servers. Samera kindly responded to say he would try to add the poll within the next few days. (Quote Give me a day or two and I can do this. I’m flying solo at the moment so I’m a bit swamped.) «robin» talk 17:22, December 5, 2006 (EST)

The new village pump is up! Make sure to change your password BEFORE trying to login - once you've logged in once at the pump, you can change it back; but you will be unable to login at the pump until a new password salt has been gestated in the database! Thanks!

Go visit the forums at http://pump.enterwiki.ws/ and post!
