Turbine, Inc. is a premier creator and operator of massive, persistent online worlds that foster powerful social gaming communities.

A team of entrepreneurs formed Turbine over a decade ago with the vision of becoming the leading provider of online entertainment. Since then, the Company has grown to over 300 employees and become one of the largest privately-held online gaming studios in North America. Turbine has created some of the most popular and exciting game worlds on the Internet, like the award-winning Asheron's Call®, Dungeons & Dragons Online™: Stormreach™, and The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™.

Turbine partnered with Microsoft to bring Asheron's Call® online in 1999. The title was one of the first 3D massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) to market and won rave reviews and numerous awards, among them "Best Roleplaying Game of the Year" (CNET Gamecenter.com) and "PC Game of the Year" in the Adventure/Role Playing Game category from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences. Still operating eight years later, Turbine continues to release exciting new content and features for this franchise.

In February 2006, Turbine launched Dungeons & Dragons Online™: Stormreach™. The launch was one of the industry's smoothest. IGN called it the most anticipated MMORPG of 2006, while GameDaily proclaimed Dungeons & Dragons Online™: Stormreach™ "one of the best experiences a role-play fan can have...esthetically one of the most pleasing games to ever hit the market." In their cover feature story in January 2006, PC Gamer called the game "the MMO that changes everything."

Then in April 2007, Turbine launched The Lord of the Rings Online™: Shadows of Angmar™, the first and only MMORPG based on the Books of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings Online™ delivers an interactive experience brimming with life and filled with the familiar people, places and monsters from the most beloved fantasy adventure of all time. From the quaint surroundings of the Shire to Angmar, the vile kingdom of the Witch-king, players can now experience the world of Middle-earth as never before.

As an increasing number of consumers turn to virtual worlds and online games, The Lord of the Rings Online has quickly established itself as the emerging leader and was named the PC MMO Game of the Year 2007 by the editorial staff of GameSpy and PC Game of the Year 2007 at the 25th Annual Golden Joystick awards. The New York Times proclaimed The Lord of the Rings Online "a major achievement of interactive storytelling, the first game truly worthy of the 'Lord of the Rings' franchise and a must-play for just about anyone with an interest in Tolkien or the future of online entertainment."

Turbine is located near Boston, Massachusetts and is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.

Transition

Turbine has gradually moved out of MMO business and focused on mobile games. It has developed the DC Comics MOBA game Infinite Crisis (which was shut down in August 2015).

This process culminated in December 2016, when DDO and LotRO (including many of the involved staff) moved under a new company, Standing Stone Games. Two other Turbine MMOs, Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings closed on January 31, 2017.
