Trap the Soul
Name: | Trap the Soul |
---|---|
School: | Conjuration |
Spell Level: | AotS 6, Sor/Wiz 8, Wlk 6 |
Components: | VerbalVerbal: A verbal component is a spoken incantation. You cannot cast spells that require this component if you cannot act or speak. Certain rare spells, such as Silence Creature, may temporarily disable spells that require verbal components., SomaticSomatic: A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. You cannot cast spells that require this component if you cannot move causing arcane spell failure resulting in a ruined spell. Spells without a somatic component may be used with disregard to Arcane Spell Failure chance. Note - that characters make the same arm gestures for most spells in DDO, so you can't tell which spells require this component by watching your character's animations., MaterialMaterial: A material component is one or more physical substances or objects that are annihilated by the spell energies in the casting process. You must have the required items in your inventory. If you run out of the components, the game will not allow you to cast the spell and will instead inform you of what component is missing. The metamagic feat Eschew Materials and some enhancements in Draconic Incarnation can remove this restriction. : Khyber Dragonshard |

Description
Forces a creature's life force and its material body into a gem on a failed Will save.
Although this essentially 'kills' the target, it is not a Death effect and functions on creatures such as Undead but not most Constructs.
This spell requires a Khyber Dragonshard as a special material component. It is often helpful to cast Enervation on a target before casting Trap the Soul to reduce the creature's saving throw.
- Since Update 34 this spell no longer bypasses death ward.
Material Components
- As of Update 50 requires a standalone special component called a Khyber Dragonshard that is found in shops wherever high quality spell components may be found. Update 54 also removed the Hit Die related variants and the spell only produces the standard gems.
Note that items with the Trap the Soul (item enchantment) don't need the material component.
Vendors that sell Khyber Dragonshards:
- Taniera Grisvill, the Artificer scroll vendor. She is located in House Cannith, in the lower section near the trainers.
Hireling
Grobbin Halfhitch, level 21 wizard hireling can cast trap the soul. Available from epic hireling vendors.
Soul Gem distribution notice
When in a group the soul gems you create by using this spell can be picked up by any member of the party. This should be considered before using this relatively expensive spell.
