Template talk:XP bonus

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Untitled[edit]

The whole purpose of this template at this time is to reduce the amount of typing need to add the bonuses to each quest; however, I am not completely happy with the variable name setup but can't think of anything better at this time without typing out the full first word.. Maybe a four character abbr of the most important word? Suggestions to my talk page please.. ShoeMaker 15:57, April 24, 2011 (EDT)

Heh, all that typing is EXACTLY why I keep the basic stuff for XP and Collectibles on my page - just edit, highlight, copy, and then paste... and then all I hafta do is fill in the numbers. Can't think of anything to make your template easier, unless you did separate templates for sneak/kills/traps/doors/smash (or whatever). Then you could just do, say, "kills|23|28|33" or "kills|23|28" or "kills|||33" if you miss the first two. - LrdSlvrhnd 16:30, April 24, 2011 (EDT)

I was just thinking of doing something similar, but in a table format. Say 5 columns wide (200px wide each), 4 rows deep (header, 3 rows showing requirements for the bonuses), this way we don't have to deal with as much eyestrain trying to fish out the numbers from the bullet-points. The XP information is nice, but I think it adds TMI to an already cluttered page.

Here's a Table I whipped up using your variables!

Secret Doors Discovered Breakables Smashed Traps Disabled No/Few Kills Many Kills
Observance Bonus (+5%): Mischief Bonus (+8%): Tamper Bonus (+8%): Discreet Bonus (+5%): Aggression Bonus (+10%):
Perception Bonus (10%): Vandal Bonus (+10%): Neutralization Bonus (+10%): Devious Bonus (+7%): Onslaught Bonus (+15%):
Vigilant Sight Bonus (15%): Ransack Bonus (+15%): Ingenious Debilitation (+15%): Insidious Cunning (+10%): Conquest Bonus (+25%):
Taurolyon 15:07, April 28, 2011 (EDT)

The only problem I see with this concept is what if only the breakables numbers are available? Then it would be more clutter than not.... I choose to use the bullet method because that is what is currently on all of the pages that have Bonus XP counts / %s available. If all of the numbers (Or even 4/5 columns worth) then yours would probably look better.. Put your table into Template:Sandbox/Taurolyon and pick a quest with a lot of the numbers available and one with only a few numbers available and use your template. Just comment out what is currently there with <!-- Commented out stuff -->. Then post a couple links on this talk page so everyone can look at and see how it looks. Epic XP[edit]

Since there's apparently Epic XP, you might want to add that in for the popup bit. And thanks for making the exact XP amounts as a popup rather than always on the page, I think it looks a LOT nicer like that. -LrdSlvrhnd 00:54, May 13, 2011 (EDT)

I agree with this; would be nice to also cover the Epic XP by this template --Hintereisen (ContribsMessage) 11:56, March 29, 2017 (EDT)
  • This template will be getting deprecated when I do the {{Quest}} overhaul. So, I'll not be spending time updating it. ;) ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 13:28, March 29, 2017 (EDT)
  • For update this template ({{XP bonus}}), we need update protected template {{Calculated XP bonus}}. UL (ContribsMessage)
    • There's no point in doing that because it'll be embedded in {{Quest}} in a month or two. ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 10:33, March 30, 2017 (EDT)
      • so my yesterdays revisions are... senseless. Nevertheless I look forward to the new {{Quest}} template. --Hintereisen (ContribsMessage) 11:25, March 30, 2017 (EDT)
        • Maybe... I saw that and felt bad. Hopefully, it won't be completely pointless and I'll be able to make use of your work when I run the bot through updating pages. I very much recommend checking out our Discord chat server when planning mass edit sprees to see what others think. :) ShoeMaker (Contribs • Message) 16:04, March 30, 2017 (EDT)
          • No worries, my fault. An improvement in the Template is always a better way. Currently the XP values have to be maintained on several different places for each quest. --Hintereisen (ContribsMessage) 16:19, March 30, 2017 (EDT)

Template looks bad after navbar switch[edit]

Since the navbar got moved to the right, and template popups always sort to the right.. They kinda make a huge mess on my screen now and look really unprofessional. I mean if I mouse over anything on the far right of the screen - the tooltip appears off the screen, and my browsers horizontal browse bar appears, but I cant move it right because unmousing over removes the tooltip obviouisly.

Doesn't only apply to the new xp template, really any popups on the right get cutoff and look poor. Tho the xp template is always bad, since the elite/epic xp mouse over never appears.

Not sure this happens to all browsers, but i get it on firefox 4 and chrome. Can do a screenshot if your not sure what I mean. Tho I think everyone gets it. Not sure you guys can fix it or not... Ideally the tooltip would appear on the left, or the navbar goes back. Shade 08:57, May 13, 2011 (EDT)

To be honest I would like to see the navbar go back, as would most of the 'regulars' it seems. However, it seems no one knows how it moved, or how to get it back.. I hadn't added it to my list of things to do yet, but I intend on doing a little more research on how to make the popup tooltip a little more dynamic so that it is not only sized based on the number of characters (Failed first attempt, not giving up..), but also so that if the popup gets within a certain distance of the edge of the screen it either walls so it doesn't run off the edge or flips from so that it starts at the mouse going right instead of left. Just a couple ideas I've been toying with in my head.. ShoeMaker 09:23, May 13, 2011 (EDT)

Also seems that when you add solo to elite numbers, the popup runs out of space even when it's only showing numbers in the 100's→ Neouni 07:24, May 14, 2011 (EDT)

Figured out how to get navbar back to the right[edit]

Looks like it's just a new default userskin. So just head to your preferences, and switch it back to "Truglass" to get the navbar back on the right. Truglass2 is the new default, which has it on the left. -Shade 18:26, May 17, 2011 (EDT)

As this is a user preference, it won't help the layout of those that look at the site with default settings. Taurolyon 01:05, May 18, 2011 (EDT)

Doesn't work without XP piped in at the end[edit]

Noticed you editing lots of quests to use this template..

Yet you didn't pipe in the XP at the end, so it just pops up "no experience available" which looks rather bad as its a giant million width popup.

Is it meant to work without piping in the xp by parsing the quest template? Cuz that doesn't work.. Actually even your example shows that problem, the one missing the xp at the end. --Shade 05:59, June 17, 2011 (EDT)

Is there a way to call in the numbers automatically from the XP colors template, or from that line of the quest template, or something? - LrdSlvrhnd 23:17, June 17, 2011 (EDT)
There is no way that I am aware of to call the information from another page or part of the main Template:quest or Template:xpcolors templates... That is until I go over and rebuild Template:quest, which will not be until I have completed Template:Named Item, and I am satisfied with it's performance. For now I just copy and paste whatever is in the Template:Xpcolors to this one. I believe I have taken care of the spacing issues.... As a side, note, could whomever posted the first couple of comments please sign your posts with ~~~~? Thank you, it would be appreciated. Big Grin -- ShoeMaker 14:40, June 18, 2011 (EDT)
He actually did... the whole thing's by Shade, I believe. -LrdSlvrhnd 01:24, June 19, 2011 (EDT)

Fewer than x killed | x or fewer killed[edit]

When recording "devious" (etc.) bonus XP, should we be recording the exclusive or inclusive upper bound? The template as it stands ("fewer than x killed") means the exclusive upper bound, but it seems more intuitive, to me at least, to record the inclusive bound ("x or fewer killed"), to match the values listed on quest XP reports.

But I've no idea if existing quest data has had the information listed based on the template text, or from just copying the XP report numbers...→ Raumkraut (ContributionsMessage) 09:28, June 7, 2012 (EDT)

I'm not thinking it matters, and I have never taken the time to get one of these bonuses (and remembered to look at the XP box at the end) to know how it looks in game... If you could achieve any of the n= bonuses and post a screen shot of it here, I will edit the template to match. ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 17:47, June 7, 2012 (EDT)
This would require a very large and tedious amount of testing, as you don't know or see what bonus you get until AFTER the quest completes.→ Habreno (ContributionsMessage) 22:50, June 7, 2012 (EDT)
Not really, if you pick a quest you knew had a devious type bonus, and you can remember to look at the XP screen at the end, it wouldn't be too hard... It's just the remembering part I always have a hard time with... ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 01:38, June 8, 2012 (EDT)
XP reports just tell you how many monsters you killed, and which devious bonus you got (same as with conquest), so I don't think a screenshot would help any. And yes, it would take a lot of investigative work, but only if you intend to get it precisely correct the first time, rather than let the value be refined from the experience of all contributors (which happens quite a lot as it is).

- My question/point was just about how we should use the template, and what wording fits best: If I get a devious bonus with 14 kills, does it make more sense to set n=14, or n=15? Personally, I would say the former, which would make the current template wording ("fewer than x") inaccurate.→ Raumkraut (ContributionsMessage) 15:47, June 8, 2012 (EDT)

The reason I want the screenshot is to see what the in-game wording is... Then, I can do a little more research into the actual mechanics of it and determine the most accurate (if not best) way to adjust it. ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 22:35, June 8, 2012 (EDT)
Finally ran a quest deviously again, so here's a screenshot: devious-bonus.jpg Raumkraut (ContributionsMessage) 15:38, June 18, 2012 (EDT)
