Template talk:Mat

Which pages did it break?[edit]

Reverting it with the only reason being "broke hundreds of pages" is not acceptable. The edit "only" affected pages in the "Item" namespace, and there are only 150-200 pages there, so I do not see how this allegedly broke "hundreds" of pages. Please explain. Reverting my edit back in until then. Technical_13 (Contribs • Message)

I see what Shades talking about. Look at Thaarak Fang, for instance Yawgmoth (ContributionsMessage) 23:00, April 12, 2012 (EDT)

Editing an important template and breaking hundreds (possible thousands by my count) =} A pretty massive mistake.

Reverted my fix to your broken edit: Utterly redicules.

Breaking hundreds of pages is absolultely a valid revert reason.

Tech your seemingly like a crazy loose canon lately, making massive site sweeping changing without discussion, breaking hundreds of pages (certainly not the first time).. Using giant childish sigs with crazy seizure inducing flashing graphics.

Is this a professional wiki, or some kiddie AOL forum? Whats up with you lately. Get it to together dude, seriously. that sig is ridiculous, breaking hundreds of pages, twice in one day is nuts.

Heres what I suggest:

Look at a few of pages you broke (pretty much every item pages using this is filled with crap atm, revert you're edit and apologize for leaving hundreds of pages broken for hours due to negligence to actually do any testing whatsoever (took me 5 seconds to notice my fix worked..).

The edit is also pretty dumb in that it adds a ton of invalid duplicate categories.. EG: Template:Named Weapon, Armor, etc, already fill categories related to materials.

Obvious thing I shouldn't have to say: Just because you typed up some code related to namespace does not mean it actually worked and only affected said pages in said namespace. Complex code is complex. Shade (ContributionsMessage) 23:15, April 12, 2012 (EDT)

That is an acceptable revert reason.. I checked out the item you linked, and can see it is the way that the Named templates use the Mat template. I have no issue with the revert. Thank you for showing me why it was broken because the pages I checked looked fine. As far as the sig goes, that is the condensed version of my forum signature. I was using the full size image, but I felt it was too large and switched to the condensed version. You guys are opposed to using our dynamic graphical signatures from the forum? Tough crowd. Meh.. ShoeMaker (ContributionsMessage) 23:24, April 12, 2012 (EDT)

It's not just the way too big image (if your sig is bigger then your post itself is an obvious red flag).. It's that combined with the blink html you used looks really poor.. html101: Don't use blink, ever.

Why? Google several million results can tell you:

lmgtfy.com/?q=Dont+Blink%2C+Dont+Marquee!

It's a rather horrible html feature that started around the AOL-netscape time - netscape being the most egregious offending browser blinking twice as fast as others.. Thus the aol-sig comment.→ Shade (ContributionsMessage) 23:39, April 12, 2012 (EDT)

I still don't see how a little flare hurts anyone.. Is a single little blinking • in the middle of my sig that looks like ( Contributions Message ) really that bad? c'mon now.. that is just ridiculous. I'm not asking everyone to make their stuff blink.. I think that being within a few hundred edits of 10K entitles me to a single blinking • ShoeMaker (ContributionsMessage) 00:57, April 13, 2012 (EDT)

Thinking you've earned some kinda privileges to use horrible web practices because of your edit count is ridiculous. Yea that shit hurts my eyes and annoys most any normal human. There's a reason theres some 4+ million plus pages on google telling you not to use it. No matter how little, blinking text is just awful.

And using editcount as an excuse for anything is just dumb. Editcount doesn't mean anything of the sort.

rule 101 of html coding: Don't use blink. If you want some silly custom sig with fancy text/colors, whatever, go nuts.. Don't burn my and other users eyes out for the sake of some stupid flare.

Using blink is simply evil. Dont be evil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blink_element#Usability%20and%20accessibility

"Flawless" Red and Green Dragonscale...[edit]

I had added them on the basis of the fact that the items are made from a collectable that the in-game name is "Flawless Red/Green Dragonscale" The actual material on the items may be Red/Green Dragonscale (without the flawless), I did not check... My thinking was that those should be linked to the material (collectable) they are crafted from... However, on second thought, perhaps it is fine without the flawless because items made from adamantine aren't linked to Adamantine Ore (or maybe they should be?). I think there should be more discussion on the topic and a mutual decision agreed upon.

I'm curious, why was it necessary to re-pipe Alchemical, Silver like silverAlchemical, Silver..........[edit]

I'm curious, why was it necessary to re-pipe Alchemical, Silver like silverAlchemical, Silver as was done here? I'd never had an issue with having to pipe links like that, and if there is an issue now, then there is something bigger that is broken, and I would be able to look into it so that it can get fixed. Thanks...

ShoeMaker (Contributions Message) 09:27, August 26, 2012 (EDT)

silverAlchemical, Silver first appeared here on June 22, 2011. It draw my attention today when I saw the old popup text that looked like this:

Bypasses any metal based damage reduction. ("Adamantine", "Alchemical, Silver", "Byeshk", "Cold Iron", "Mithral")

Way too heavy on quotation marks usage just to avoid confusion between the commas between the different mats and the comma within <Alchemical, Silver> mat. Removing the pipe, quotation marks and that particular comma brought it back to normal.by Mjoll (ContributionsMessage) 11:29, August 26, 2012 (EDT)

Recent update[edit]

I'm not entirely sure how, but the most recent update to this page, on September the 4th, seems to have broken the template on a lot of other pages. See Templar's Retribution and Epic Sworn Silver Scimitar for examples.

Anyone know how to fix this? PurpleSerpent (ContribsMessage) 04:34, September 12, 2022 (EDT)

If I understand you correctly, the "broken the template on a lot of other pages" is in reference to some extra whitespace/lines being included in the material field data point displayed via the NamedItem templates? I suspect this may have to do with some line breaks added to the mat template for increased readability. I will test how to remedy the extra whitespace/lines in a sandbox and update template:mat accordingly.
