Talk:Custom character builds

Forums: Index > Village pump > Custom character builds

Previously I just posted my builds on the forums.. But since I'm becoming more of a fan of the wiki I'm gonna expand out builds section a bit.. Created a new category: Custom character builds .

However due to the nature of a wiki and builds, there's bound to be some conflict.. As the wiki emphasizes sharing, openess and a neutral point of view, while character builds by their nature tend to be personal, opinionated.. As we've seen on turbines poorly maintained wiki, there can be contraversy when it comes to editing personal builds, but despite that I think we should allow them.. But moderate them in a much less severe way then turbine.

Turbine stance: Make as crap a build you like, put it in the official builds category, and if other disagree and edit it, lock down the page to prevent editing.

We need to decide on a fairer, less severe stance..

My proposal, we allow both, but are clear to the reader which is which:

  • Wiki character builds: These builds are maintained/improved by the whole community. Anyone can edit them for content, as long as they specify a fair reason in the edit summary. They are given fairly generic names, and put in the main Custom character builds category.
  • Personal character builds: These builds are more "forum-style", with wiki enhancements. Other the author of the build is allowed to edit it for content.. But any wiki editor can edit it for style/formatting/spelling/any copy editing. Content changes could be discussed on their talk page.
    • Builds are CLEARLY marked as personal builds. EG: They must be placed in Username/Build name. and categorized in "Category:Personal character builds", not the standard higher level area. (Though if there are lots they can be broken down by class same as the wiki-builds).
    • Unlike Turbine: We will reserve the right to convert/delete outright terrible builds from the wiki. If say 2+ ddowikivip or higher agree the build is REALLY terrible, it can be either converted to a wiki-build, so we could edit to to make it agreeable. Or if the author prefers it, we would simple delete it and they could maintain it on the forums instead.
  • New player templates(gona renamed it to builds): These should be wiki-builds only, as not a lot are needed, and they should be kept simple and up to date - so having the whole wiki community able to contribute is important. Personal builds rarely fit this category imo.

Moderator priliminary action: If a personal build continuously gets it's content changed by a anon user that isn't the author, we could set the page to "auto-confirmed protect" editing.. Don't think we should go any higher then that, as it defeats the purpose of the wiki. If said users contiues vandalism, we could give them a warning on talk page, and take further action on a case by case basis.

Unmaintained builds: On a adminstrator discression: Personal Builds that have not been updated for 3+ years could be either converted to wiki builds, and brought up to date, or deleted if they are too out of date to be useful (due to a game update) or similar enough to others we already have.
