Talk:Browse portal/Stuff

From DDO wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This section is highly redundant with the Equipment page. As I understand it, the point of the browse portal is to have everything centrally located, so I left the links duplicated here even though there's additional stuff listed on the equipment page. I was tempted to just have a link to Equipment, but that looks rather lame on this page and would decentralize the links. A conundrum... Dedridd 12:59, March 2, 2006 (EST)

Three little gifts: includes work with any page, <includeonly>text</includeonly>, and <noinclude>text</noinclude>. (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 13:01, March 2, 2006 (EST)
Hmmm, I never thought of including a page minus fluff (like headers), which is what I'm assuming you're getting at. But even so, the formatting between the browse portal and the equipment page is drastically different. Wouldn't that make the browse portal page too tall? Dedridd 13:52, March 2, 2006 (EST)
The syntax for page including escapes me, and I can't find anything on this site's help topics nor the mediawiki's help section (which is where I found details on <includeonly> for usage in the item templates). Just throw me the basic syntax if you get a chance, and I'll play around with it in the sandbox. Dedridd 14:05, March 2, 2006 (EST)
To include a page what has worked for me in the past is {{:pagename}} I think if you use curlybrackets it includes whatever is inside and square brackets is a link to it. -- koolkat 14:22, March 2, 2006 (EST)
Perfect, thanks! I thought curly brackets might be the key, but combined them with everything but a colon. Dedridd 14:27, March 2, 2006 (EST)
" But even so, the formatting between the browse portal and the equipment page is drastically different. Wouldn't that make the browse portal page too tall? " - Yes. Which is why I think the browse portal in general just needs to be maintained separately from the other pages. (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 21:31, March 2, 2006 (EST)
I was very careful to reduce the section headers on the Equipment page from 2 to 3, to ensure that the entries would fit nicely in the TOC, for precisely that reason. I don't think vertical height is such a big deal when users can jump directly to the section they're looking for via a TOC, not that it turned out looking as bad as I expected it to be - I take it you think otherwise? A browse page full of links is by nature going to be huge - organization will keep it usable, however. Dedridd 09:32, March 3, 2006 (EST)
I keep seeing a browse portal more compact with boxes and sections simply packed tightly with links - the entire white section of the layout would be packed solid almost with links in the browse portal I envision. Also, no TOC for what I see - waasted space if you can keep it on one or two browser pages. (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 14:27, March 3, 2006 (EST)
All right, dammit, that's a good reason. I'm not looking forward to redoing that whole section, as I fought with the version previous to the 'include' for a long time, and still didn't like the way it turned out. I'll get to it after I redo the armor and weapon category pages. Although I can't figure out why you dropped that 'three little gifts' line above in the first place - I suspect you were setting me up from the beginning. ;) Dedridd 14:38, March 3, 2006 (EST)
You know some conversation is getting too long when you have to copy-paste the colons from the previous line and add one because you can't count them. Anyway, what the heck was that? Something about three little gifts? (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 15:01, March 3, 2006 (EST)
You also know some conversation is getting too long when you don't understand someone's reference to something you said at the top of the thread... :b Don't worry about it, you can let this whole thing drop. I'll take care of updating the equipment stuff. Dedridd 15:07, March 3, 2006 (EST)
Nah, thats a symptom of too many conversations lol - yes, what do you mean you didn't understand them? (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 15:11, March 3, 2006 (EST)
I understood them, but not why you brought them up here if you didn't want me to use them. Dedridd 15:37, March 3, 2006 (EST)
Colons... givin me... headache... I dunno why... forget it... (post by Peerless - see his talk and contribs.) 15:57, March 3, 2006 (EST)
