Accessory (clothing and jewelry) enchantment overview[edit]

Most clothing and jewelry items that you find in the game give passive bonuses to numeric stats like your skills, abilities, and armor class. Others can be activated to cast a certain spell some number of times per rest. These magical enchantments are indicated by standard phrases before and after the item's name. A random loot item can have a maximum of one prefix before its name and one suffix after it. Unique quest rewards and unique chest loot items have unique names and may have any number of predetermined enchantments, or even penalties.

Passive bonuses typically do not stack, so if you have an item that gives +1 Charisma and another that gives +3 you will only receive +3, not +4. (The stacking rules only apply to positive bonuses; penalties always apply.) Accessories with skill bonuses generally come in the full range of values starting at +1 and capping out at +13 on heroic items.

You may only wear one of each kind of accessory, except for Rings, of which you may wear two. Robes and Outfits are not "clothing"; they use the Armor rules. Warforged may wear clothing accessories just like anyone else (but not armor).

Body and mind enchantments[edit]

Enchantments on random items are selected from two groups:

  • Body: Str / Con / Dex / Fortified of Dodge / False Life / Protection / Seeker / Speed ..
  • Mind: Int / Wis / Cha / Deadly of Accuracy / Natural Armor / Resistance / ...

Body and mind enchantments don't mix on random items. Some enchantments appear only on certain item types.

Minimum level calculation[edit]

On heroic level random items, six tiers of bonuses are available.

Base cost. Also bonus to Stat, Deadly, Accuracy,
Protection, Natural Armor, Seeker, Dodge, Resistance
Bonus to Skill Fortification False Life, Speed Wizardry Minimum Level
+1 +3 20 +5 I / 25 1
+2 +5 40 +10 II / 50 3
+3 +7 60 +15 III / 75 5
+4 +9 80 +20 IV / 100 7
+5 +11 100 +25 V / 125 9
+6 +13 105 +30 VI / 150 11

On epic random items (ML20 or more), bonuses go up to +11 (+21 for skills, 130% for fortification), usually on items with Wondrous Craftsmanship.

Old information[edit]

Item enchantments have changed as the game developed. Some items no longer drop, for example +15 skill items. Old items still exist in game though.

How rings work[edit]

Some enchantments appear only on certain items, such as Ogre Power appearing on gloves and bracers primarily and on rings much less often. Rings do not have their own unique set of possible enchantments. Instead, rings may have any combination of prefix and/or suffix that is legal for any other accessory, with the exception of the Armored and Spell Focus prefixes which appear on bracers only. So you can find a Charismatic Ring of Elvenkind (as available on a cloak), or a Charismatic Ring of Inner Focus (as on a helm), but not a Charismatic Ring of Springing. Springing normally comes on boots, so rings of Springing can only be paired with a prefix that is also available on boots (and Charismatic doesn't come on boots).
