[edit] Gold seller Ads
I have no problem with the ads, but I would like to see this one blocked. I have no problem advertising other games or wiki-related stuff to help you pay the hosting fees but I don't want us to advertise gold seller's services. The same thing applies if any similar ads show up. Would that be fine by you? --Borror0 19:30, May 14, 2010 (EDT)
I need the web url that appears at the bottom of the ad. Its too fuzzy in that pic to make out. This is just an experiment, I'm not sure the ads will even make enough to be worth it. I THINK it is GoldRockU.com...which I have now blocked --Xevo 19:38, May 14, 2010 (EDT)
[edit] admins and logins
I just sent a message to an admin concerning a problem I'm having logging in, and I just noticed that their last comment was in 2009 last year...your comments seem reasonably up to date, so may I ask...Is this a dead wiki? If not, what's going on? I notice all kinds of signs that this wiki is dying, and I'd like to either kick it back into action, or start a new one. (preferably revive this one because of all the work already done) I've been playing D and D since 1977, and I hate to see this. By the way, I still can't log in or get a new password. My email is woghd911@hotmail.com and my account here is archangelwoghd. Thanx. --209.112.222.8 16:50, June 5, 2010 (EDT)
- In no way is this Wiki dying, ever since DDO went F2P the wiki has had an influx of contributors who have put in a lot of work in not only adding more content to the wiki but also improving the look of it. What are these signs of the wiki dying that you have seen to give that impression? UltraMonk 00:07, June 6, 2010 (EDT)
- Well, the two other administrators haven't responded to their user pages since last year, and the system seems to be running on automatic. The password retrieval system doesn't work, etc., etc... I'm still waiting for a response from this admin, but it looks like he only checks in every week or so (3 weeks since his above post). The main page is out of date too. These things give me the impression that there is some sort of trouble, particularly when the main admins have been absent since last year. This is Archangelwoghd. --209.112.222.8 21:29, June 6, 2010 (EDT)
- Please don't think I'm ranting or bitching about everyone's hard work... I just want to help. But I can't do much if I can't login. --209.112.222.8 21:35, June 6, 2010 (EDT)
- I went and read through what you posted on Borror0's page and I know what your problem is. When you go to upload an image it takes you to the enterwiki.net domain, and I think you either login with the same credentials or just make an account on it with the same credentials. So you will use the same login details for both sites, don't worry you are meant to upload any images to the enterwiki domain. The system didn't kick you out when you went to do it, you just didn't have an account there. So try logging back into ddowiki.com and the enterwiki.net with your username and password. The password request you made was probably done on enterwiki.net and because you don't have an account on there you wouldn't have got the email. Let me know how it goes. UltraMonk 00:09, June 7, 2010 (EDT)
- I think the problem is indeed what Ultramonk has described. If what he has suggested does not work, let us know on this talk page and we'll try something else.
- As for the rest of your comments: The last comment I replied to was in April 17, 2010 which is a far cry from "end of 2009." It's just that some of the comments have not been organized chronologically. This wiki is most definitively not dying. In fact, I don't think it has ever been this active. --Borror0 08:37, June 7, 2010 (EDT)
- From the ddowiki, here: http://ddowiki.com/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=User_talk:Xevo
- "You have made too many recent attempts on this account's password. Please wait before trying again."
- "A new password has been sent to the e-mail address registered for "Archangelwoghd". Please log in again after you receive it."
- Thanx but I was already aware that I was on enterwiki. I've made a fresh password request from DDO wiki every day since this happened, and have still gotten no response. --209.112.222.8 17:25, June 8, 2010 (EDT)
- Mmm ok, and you have looked in your junk mail folder to ensure the email didn't up in there? UltraMonk 19:54, June 8, 2010 (EDT)
Let me clear this up as succinctly as possible: Xevo is, as far as I know, completely disassociated from this site. I myself am, for the most part, as well. One thing I know for sure is that the sendmail system on his server (the one this site is running on) does not work, and I don’t remember if it even ever has; password reset and retrieval are permaborked as far as I’m concerned. Steward-wise, Xevo and I are on equal footing; we co-founded the EnterWiki network years and years ago; unfortunately, it’s sort of in indefinite hibernation mode. The only active/meaningful wiki is the DDOwiki, and we’re fine with that AFAIK.
Long story short, don’t accidentally make the system send you a reset password… because then you lose access to your account. I know, it sucks, but I don’t know any way around it without the painful process of getting a DB dump from Xevo and then moving the site to a new place. Not to mention that we’ve already tried that once before, and it completely failed. (Remember http://ddowiki.net/?) I’ve resolved this issue with Archangelwoghd via e-mail; I moved his old account out of the way so he could create a new one with his preferred username.
On another note; he seems anxious to contribute to the wiki: I’d suggest bumping him up to meta:Superuser, but I’ll leave that up to Borror0.
Thanks Elliot for the fix. And now we at least have some sort of work-around for the sendmail problem, which is a serious problem, but not one that should prevent this wiki from being very useful to players of the game none-the-less. I have about 100 screenshots of monsters I'd like to upload (among other things), and I also want to thank everyone else who helped. You guys rock! --Archangel Talk 13:24, June 9, 2010 (EDT)
- Thanks Elliott. Xevo is still working on the wiki. If you log out, you'll notice he even put ads. Thanks for fixing the problem though. Much appreciated. --Borror0 09:52, June 10, 2010 (EDT)
Yes, I do check on the wiki at least a few times a week. I actively administer the server it runs on as well. As for actually contributing to the wiki, that's a different story. Since I no longer play DDO I do not have much to contribute. I am also putting my efforts into a Starcraft 2 wiki at this time. I am definitely available to fix any technical problems encountered with DDO wiki though. As far as I know, the email system works. I get email when my watch pages are updated. I will look into it though. --Xevo 13:33, June 12, 2010 (EDT)
- I just reset my password using the lost password feature. The emails from this wiki are most likely going to your junk mail folder. You will need to configure your email client to always accept email from ddowiki.com. --Xevo 13:44, June 12, 2010 (EDT)
- Nope, not going to the junk folder, obviously it was the first thing I checked. The only other time I've ever seen a problem like this was also on a wiki. (I've been involved with a lot of wikis over the years) The problem had to do with the mail not working with non-confirmed users. Although I've been autoconfirmed since, at the time this problem I wasn't, so it may have something to do with it. Good to see you are around. :) --Archangel Talk 13:56, June 12, 2010 (EDT)
- Ah sorry, I always start with the simplest solution. What email service do you use? Maybe they blacklisted this server. --Xevo 14:14, June 12, 2010 (EDT)
- It's hotmail. (woghd911@hotmail.com) I get a lot of spam through them, but I wouldn't put it past them to block something like ddo while allowing every offshore spammer through, lol. --Archangel Talk 17:48, June 13, 2010 (EDT)
[edit] Problem with uploading images
I would seem that when you click on the red-linked file name to get to the upload page, it directs you to the ddowiki.com upload page. that page is not usable, which may lead to users believing they can't upload files. Could look into addressing this problem? --Borror0 19:21, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
- Seriously, if nothing else there should be a warning explaining the problem. That was the thing that started my original mess. The user eventually ends up at the other site trying to upload a picture, sees the login request, thinks he or she has been booted, and attempts to get the system to email them a new password. At that point their password is reset and they can't get in for real. There is no doubt in my mind that we are losing a lot of users because of this stuff. I originally thought this wiki was dead, remember? Even if a user doesn't go down the bumpy road I did, we are probably still losing people just because they think they can't upload images. --Archangel Talk 20:00, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
- I didn't realize that was happening, yuck. I wish we never used the separate img wiki. I think it is too late to switch that now, unless I can figure out how to move all the ddowiki images at img.enterwiki.net to ddowiki.com. That will be a large project for me, it should be possible though. As for fixing it, I haven't yet found a way. This is actually a MediaWiki bug: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23140 --Xevo 22:14, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
[edit] Promote function is broke
I'm trying to upgrade UltraMonk's user groups and it does not work. --Borror0 19:21, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
- I won't be able to look at this one until tomorrow.--Xevo 22:14, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
- Also, are you sure this isn't working? When I try to edit user rights, it gives me a white page when I submit. (That is strange and buggy, I'll admit.) The right do seem to get changed though. --Xevo 22:32, June 18, 2010 (EDT)
- Apparently, it fixed itself. It didn't use top work for a while. I just always forgot to bring it up. --Borror0 16:05, June 19, 2010 (EDT)
