[edit] A DDO Crafting Primer

Crafting, introduced with Module 6, is a new way to create and upgrade items, using ingredients gathered in various quests and raids. As currently implemented in DDO, it is all about ingredients and recipes. There are no skills, feats, or level-ups required, just farming for ingredients and the putting them together through the upgrade process to make and upgrade items and weapons. It is basically "get tokens and customize your reward" system.

[edit] Crafting that is available to all characters

Stone of Change
Stone of Change

The most basic level of crafting is available to all characters with access to the Marketplace or The Twelve. Next to the Marketplace Bank, and right outside the Twelve's Tower is found the Stone of Change. The Stone of Change is used to upgrade existing items (simple +5 Warhammer for example, those are not part of "special loot" through certain process). Currently there are not too many recipes enabled for the Stone of Change, but the developers have stated that this will change in the future.

The currently enabled Stone of Change recipes allow you following;

  • Convert Dragon Shards
  • Bind & Attune your items, so it no longer takes permanent damage
  • Increase the durability and hardness of an item
  • Add minor bonuses to your item, by spending collectable items

These are simple upgrades, and for the full recipes see Stone of Change - Recipes.

[edit] Green Steel Items

The major portion of Crafting in DDO is the Module 6 "Raid Loot" system, which is also referred to as the Green Steel Items. Green Steel Items are "blanks" that are manufactured, then upgraded through a series of crafting steps in The Shroud, which is a level 17 Raid area.

Green Steel Weapons are considered as high-end DPS gear, and you can create as many of them as you want. Green Steel Accessories are amazingly powerful as well, although you cannot equip more than one at a time without certain cleansing process.

Access to Meridia, Tier 1 Favor with The Twelve (40 favor point), and completion of all 5 Pre-Raid quests in the Vale of Twilight are required.

For more detailed information, see following articles.

[edit] Dragontouched Armor

Another (and maybe less popular) portion of Crafting is the Dragontouched Armor, introduced with Module 8. In Reaver's Refuge high level area, you can collect various "Eldrich Runes". By adding these Runes, you can create Armors, Robes, Docents of your own. Some players criticize this system as a "Slot Machine" and the mechanism indeed works like that (what you get from Runes are pretty much random). But if you make it right and are lucky enough, result will be pretty pleasant.

Access to Reaver's Refuge, completion of Stealer of Souls quest and its pre-quests are required.

For more detailed information, see Dragontouched Armor.
